Hi i am due for an upgrade and have no reason to leave orange.
My current contract is online 25 and costs me £20 a month for about 300 minutes and umteen texts non of Which i use up due to using magic numbers.

I like the nokia X6 so do i phone upgrades and see what they say or go straight to retentions?
Online i have to part with £99 for the phone and that is a no no.
This may be a daft question but i am very stressed and just returned to work after four months off sick.
    Advice please

Go to upgrades first and tell thim you wont pay for the phone, but you are happy with your current contract... try and find a deal online that offers the phone for free on a plan you like, quote it and ask them to match, if they don't, tell them you wan't to leave and they'll put you through to retentions who should definitely match it.

Don't pay a penny for that phone.

Just had a look and the phone is free on £30 18 month tarrifs, I reckon you could get one of those down to £20 if you pushed.

Previuos contract was £15 pm for 500 mins and 100 texts which was offered at my previous renewal.

To be honest I dont need much from a phone except the ability to make calls and send texts (obviously receiving both too would also be nice ;) ) I want something thats got a good battery life so it doesn't need recharged on a daily basis.

A half decent camera is a bonus. If I get unlimited internet then I might try using it but probably not to any great extent. I'm going try and not get involved in using my phone for any business related activities.

I scribbled down 5800 next to Blackberry but as no such model exists as far as I can tell I've obviuosly got that wrong.

I've currently got the SE K810i which is fine except for the dodgy speaker after being dropped once too often :o

If you want good battery life you should stay away from banafide smartphones, however, Blackberry are meant to be good, not so goiod on the camera front though.

If you want a good camera and you'll only be using the net every so often, go for the Sony Ericsson W995 - 8 megapixel camera, WiFi.... got eveything you'll need.

Hi! My Dads contract is up in a couple of days he gets 300mins and 100 texts for £15 a month.

I need to get him the same deal or better so I am going to call retentions. Problem is I don't know what phone to get him. he wants a touch screen but I think he would struggle with that. Can any one recomend a phone that has a decent camera and has the option of touch screen and keypad? I know many are talking about the htc hero is this user friendly and is the camera good? I know this is touch screen only.

I have also looked at the Sony Ericsson w995 which doesn't have touch screen. I think this would be suited to him but the last ericsson I had (w9101i) the key pad split and the slider went wobbly, does anyone know if this model has these problems?

    Any advice appricated!

Thanks for that. I realised last night my next billing date was today so had to make a decision or it would be another month at £25. Phoned back up and spoke to a nice guy who talked me through some phones and I asked about other touchscreens etc and he offerred me lots of different ones. Almost went for the HTC Hero but I ended up going for the SE W995 as I've been pretty happy with K810i.. Never had a slide phone before but I'm sure I'll cope.

thanks again for all the advice. :)

I think you'll struggle to get a hero on his current contract...
Orange band their customers from 1-5 depending on how much they've spent, with 5 being the highest...

The higher you are, the more power you have when you upgrade, as they've made moreprofit off you. If you go over your contract a lot you'll be a higher band etc

As your dad is only paying 15 quid a month, he wont be able to get a hero for free on that conbtract, or I doubt he will.... if you go for 24 month he might be able to.

    Look at gsmarena
for phones that you think will suit your dads needs... then see if orange do them...

youmight want to try a motorola dext (touchscreen and keypad) or the w995....

I know the w995 is good, but had no experience of the dext..
I had an lg touchscreen which was good; my GF had the samsung tocco and its crap

If it's on the same package, you should have went for the hero... had a go of one the other day and they are great... better IMO.... although camera isnt as good.

But yeah, you should have went for hero, then sold it and bought the 995as the hero is more expensive :P

    what deal did you get?

I have been on a SIM only contract for over a year now and need a better phone. So a couple of questions.

    1) Are the only phones that orange can offer the ones on the orange website (for example, the n97 is no longer online, do they still have access or would one have to go to dialaphone or the likes?)?

    2) I am really looking for them to match deals which can be had via online retaillers. Are they likely to do this for me inspite of my spending history being modest or should I just go and buy the online deal straight off?

    3) I noticed that many of the online retailers offer upgrades as well. Is there any merit in going to them instead of orange? Will they then be able to offer me the broader range of phones and will they keep in mind the offers they have to new customers and perhaps improve?

    Many thanks

  • Just been on to upgrades I have 3 months left on my contract but could upgrade today.
They gave me a free HTC HERO ( £99 on the website) 200 minutes unlimited txts and 500mb of data for £20 a month. I also still get my free home broadband for that price!

I have never spent more than £20 a month for over 2 years now, but the lady I spoke to gave me this deal straight away, I had pepared myself to start haggling with them but I didn't have to. I must only be a band 1 customer so am quite suprised what she offered me. They must be desperate to keep peoples business at the moment because I think this is a good deal.

This was with upgrades not retentions

So if you are due a new phone soon ring up on the first day you are entitled to upgrade.

You'd have to go to external sites. Stay away from the N97 though.

Depends on the deal and the person you get from Orange, but TBF if you tell them dialaphone offered you x deal on orange and will they match it, they have nothing tolose by saying no, as you'll still be on their network.

The online retailers offer more phones. The phone I currently have is not available in the colour I have on Orange. I got this phone from e2save on upgrade. You can also get better dealson upgrade, you just have to approach it correctly.

    Many thanks

    Hope that helps.

Thanks guys. I am still on the drawing board as to what phone to get - the N97 mini is the perfect phone if only it worked and nothing else seems to offer the same supposed ability as an all rounder. Every year I have this problem - manufacturers faff about and produce endless phones. Yet almost every great phone has an area in which it fails miserably. You'd wonder why someone doesn't just make a phone that does everything well instead of worrying about making it the best in one area!
