  • Hi there,

My contract finishes mid march, so I am allowed to upgrade from mid december.

Currently have the nokia 6500 slide with the deal
    300min
    100 text
    unlimited landline calls

All for £12.50 a month (including loyalty discounts etc).

I am now looking at getting a Blackberry (of some sort, something like a Curve) and was just wondering the likelihood of being able to get one for as close to £20 as possible (£25 max). I want a similar deal, but more texts and internet access of course.

Do you reckon this is a reasonable request to make for the price I want? And if so any recommendations as to how to approach it?

    Cheers

Hey, this is aimed particularly at lufcgirl, but any help would be great.

I'm currently on Dolphin 25 Websave, so £20 a month. My average spend is £22 over my contract so far. I'm about 3 months away from the end of my contract and am eligible for upgrade.

The phone I want is the HTC Hero, and after ringing loyalties and retentions a couple of times the deal I have been offered is:

200 mins, Unlimited texts, 80MB Internet + HTC Hero for £40 @ £20 per month

I can't find a better deal than this for this price, but the only problem I have is whether 80MB would be enough for internet. I've tried a number of times to better this deal but apparently Ive used up all my loyalty points. Guy in retentions said if I wait till the end of my contract I'd get more points, so may get a better deal.

Just wondering if there's any point in waiting. As I'm on such a low package, is it likely I'd be able to get unlimited internet even if i wait till end of contract? Or is it just better to go with what I've been offered and get the phone 3 months earlier (as I really want it!)as the deal I've been offered seems pretty good for a Band 2 upgrade.

And if anyone knows any better Hero deals out there, let me know!

    Cheers

  • To be honest, with Business, the frontline staff have about the same amount of powers as Retentions as the costs of the handsets and any rules applied for discounts (or lack thereof!) were set by Apple themselves.

    Hope that helps,

    SDW

I wud agree that frontline staff have same amount of power on the iphone as retentions as orange will not give any one discount at all, but regarding any other phone I will not agree at all. I have had the pleasure of speaking to both front line staff and also retentions for the last 11 years on every single upgrade. Also i have received same comments from family and friends. No one was given a deal they liked by front line staff until they spoke to retentions
  • The girlfriends contract is up in March, but she is eligible for an upgrade tomorrow which I believe she will jump at since her Tocco is very much on its last legs!

At the moment she is paying £35 for 600 mins, unlimited texts and internet. She got this tariff while she was working in the Orange shop, so it might have been a staff offer or something.

Anyway, she wants touchscreen, decent camera and wi-fi, so she was hoping to get the Samsung Jet or LG Viewty Smart as an upgrade. What are the odds of getting one of them free of charge on her tariff?

i wud wait for your contract to end as you always get a better deal when your contract is ended as retentions know you can request to be disconnected and the person who answers does not like disconnects on their profile. Few tips - the last three months spend is what orange determine your loyalty on. make sure you for the next three months use all your minutes and go slightly over if you can as it shows you are in need of more minutes. use more txt than your allowance and use the internet a little but not much as can be expensive. this will show who ever is upgrading you that you need more minutes, more txt messages and he will say to you that u dont use much internet and give you the smallest internet package. but give your reply back that u only use a bit as it is expensive and need it a lot. another good outcome in waiting for you to be out of your contract will be that htc should have released a better htc hero by then. the one now is ok but needs improement and by then hopefully applications on the android will be a lot more currently at 20,000. + u will be on android 2 and not the current one. but ur choice

I was offered the 80mb of free internet which I took, however upon reflection I decided that I would prefer the 500mb. If you go over your data allowence Orange pretty much rip you off, £2.55 a mb, a staggering amount. I use around 5-10mb a day, checking the news, weather, FB and downloading the odd app here and there. Also you can watch iPlayer and youtube to your hearts content on the train etc.

for £35 a month i would be expecting a much higher spec phone than those mentioned.

Yup I'd imagine you could easily get an SE Satio for £35 a month on retention
  • The thing is we won't be going through to retentions since its still another 3 months until the contract is up. I'm only used to dealing with retentions, never bothered upgrading early before.

But if she can get the Viewty Smart (which she has her heart set on) for free on her current tarrif, I'm sure she'll be a happy bunny.

I'll report back tomorrow to see what they offer.

5800 is very popular. Many consider it the cost effective iPhone. Bonus is the 8gig memory card in the box. Plus we only have the Comes With Music version so you get unlimited music downloads from the Nokia music store. Downside is the camera, only 3.2mp but adequate if not projecting images.
I don't rate the Jet in the slightest. Much prefer the Tocco Ultra if going for a Samsung. 5mp Camera is the only thing it beats the 5800 on plus the back of the phone looks horrible with the red stripes. Tocco Ultra has the benefit of being both touchscreen and having a keypad plus looks really good as a slide phone and 8mp camera.

If you ask for a PAC code you do indeed get retentions. However the N97 Mini was the one we sold. There was a stock update stating 600 were being made again to sell in upgrades, but I'm not sure if they were to clear an accidental back order of the phone or not. Personally I wouldn't get it, purely due to the amount of problems I've read about it.

Gone for the Nokia 5800, 18mth contract, £15/mth 200mins, unlimited texts, 80mb data.
I dont make many calls so dont need to many minutes. I think ive not done too bad there.
Only thing im not sure about is the 80mb allowance, presumably thats enough for emails, ebay etc and i can use my wlan for music, apps etc
