Orange Retention Offers

Hey guys,
So first time i'm posting here, my orange contract is due to expire 16th January and i'm wondering how to get the best renewal offer?
From reading here I understand I have to be put through to their retentions department and call up every so often to get the best contract deal possible.
My current contract is £20/month for 600 minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited internet on a Nokia 6300 - I got this deal through their retentions team 18months ago, I just don't remember how I got it exactly!
I read here that it's best to wait till the contract expires then ask for a deal by ringing them, is this true? If so, what will happen in the period between the expiration of this contract and me sorting out a new one - in terms of call charges etc. Also, why is asking for a PAC code a good idea? Does it help improve the deal somehow, and when should I request it?
Cheers guys, sorry for all the questions!0 -

Retentions have the better offers, its their job to keep your business.
You'll get a better offer when you're out of contract. After the end of your minimum term your on a 30 day rolling contract (ie you need to give 30 days to end).
Asking for your pac code give the impression that you're going to go to another network, so they try harder to keep you (in theory). You don't need to use the pac and after 30 days it expires and your contract continues.
Hope that helps ?0 -

Cheers Jon, that's been very helpful!
So would it be worth contacting them in the days leading up to my contract expiring, or should I just not waste my time and ask them after it's finished?0 -
Sorry, one last question; I've not kept up to date with the latest and greatest phones out there, but i'm someone who doesn't need much really. What are good mid-range phones that are worth me looking into/requesting right now? I've been interesting in getting a QWERTY keypad - real keys or touchscreen - not too fussed, but I can live without it.0

What about a Blackberry 8520/8900 or a Nokia E71 for a qwerty? For a touchscreen, try a Nokia 5800 or a HTC Hero?0

I have upgraded my phone roughly 6 months ago and got a reasonable deal with orange retentions but am still paying an average of like £90 a month due to having to use my phone abroad etc.... do you think they will let me upgrade my phone even though the end of my contract is due for ages.... will they sell me an upgrade for much cheaper than RRP? how is the best way to go about it? thanks0
