If you're lucky, they will accidentally add an extra free 500MB data bundle on top like they did for me.

Oh, and unfortunately, orange maps is not compatible with the Hero.

That would be nice! Not sure how much I'll use but better to have to much than not enough!!

Shame about the maps though
  • Hi everyone, first post on here, just after some contract renewal advice!

My 18 month Dolphin 30 contract (£25pm - 500mins/unlimited texts) runs out in 6 weeks or so (been with them for 3 years, longer on PAYG), and while the news or Orange getting the iPhone towards the end of the year is interesting, given the 02 tariffs it's likely to be too pricey for what I need. I currently have an N82.

Really I've decided I'd quite like the HTC Hero, so I gave Orange retentions a call this afternoon under the pretence that I was trying to find out when I could request my PAC number, thereby triggering a conversation about why I wanted to leave. Told them my current cost pm was too high, as I hardly touch those minutes. I'd need 200 maximum. The first offer they made me was:

    200 mins
    Unlimited Texts
    Free Nokia 6303
    £10pm (18 months)

Obviously I was looking for a better phone, so began dropping hints about the HTC Hero, and also that I wasn't concerned about dropping the cost down that much and was looking to add the £5pm web bundle too. Ideally I'd be happy still paying £25pm, with less minutes, including the web bundle. The offer they made for the Hero was:

    200 mins
    Unlimited Texts
    'Unlimited' Internet
    £20pm
    HTC Hero: £360(!)

I'm aware this is pretty much the sim-free cost of the Hero. Orange were saying that because of my relatively low last contract, the cost of the phone and the current economic times, they couldn't knock money off the cost of the handset otherwise they'd be losing money.

Basically, my question is am I going get them to make me a better deal than this? The default deal I can do online would be all of the above for £25pm (Dolphin 20 + Internet) and the Hero for £166. The deal they've offered me is actually over £100 worse!

    Any tips?

Even retentions have limits. The system will only let them offer you deals based on your spend over the last 6 months. If your spend hasn't been that high any offer won't be so good, sorry. . .
  • i think you'll find most of Orange's call center staff work on a 3 on 3 off shift, which can make them a bit hard to get hold off sometimes.

I had pretty much the exact same contract as you and managed to get an HTC Hero for free, but had to go through phones 4 U. I now pay just over £20 per month for 200 mins, unlimited texts and internet bundle. I was paying £15 p/m before for my contract (initially it was £25, but pointed out I wasn't using the mins, so they dropped the cost and mins - was originally 600 mins). Phones 4 U said they could do a handset only upgrade, which meant I'd keep my current tariff (£15) for the next 18 months and I could get the HTC Hero for free. I then just called Orange after I'd bought the phone and added the £7.50 unlimited internet (£5 is only evenings and weekends apparently) and that was that :).

I'm really happy with my Hero and reckon it's miles better than the Iphone!

Ah, you're right. It's only £5 if you're upgrading through Orange or new; £7.50 for existing customers.

That sounds like the kind of deal I've been looking for to be honest! How did you go about doing that then, had your contract already expired? Did you deal with P4U over the phone or instore? Sorry for all the questions!

We have two 18 month contracts which are just about up.

We have been with Orange for about 10 years on the first one and our last deal, 18 months ago, was £25 a month for 700 cross network minutes, unlimited landline calls, 100 texts, magic numbers and a free LG Viewty.

Not bothered with texts or even many cross network minutes but I do use the landline calls a reasonable amount. What should I be aiming for please? (Do need a new 'phone as the Viewty is showing it's age.)

The second contract we have had for about 4 years and 18 months ago ended up with a deal for 500 minutes and a free LG K600 for £15 a month.

The minutes are plenty but would like a new phone of some sort as OH never really liked the LG. Again, what could we aim for please?

Happy to haggle as I do for most of my business purchases.

    Thanks for any help.

Not bad but have seen better and for a shorter contract. 24 months is too long I think.

But if you are happy with it then that is what it's all about really.
