I have an orange contract but I am looking for a second contract for teenage son. Phoned and they offered me 200 x network minutes and 300 texts for £19.57. I told them I was looking for less than £15 and they said nothing available. I saw in local phone shop 600 minutes and unlimited texts and phoned orange and asked why I could go into a shop and get this deal but as an existing customer they wouldn't offer it to me. He said there wasn't any such offer but I went back and checked. I think we are going with Virgin but when my contract is up I won't stay with Orange, I don't feel like a valued customer.

I think the key phrase there is 'local phone shop', they're doing their own deals maybe of setting the cost with their kick back from Orange. That why the agents can't find it...

Yes I agree, but it is poor on Orange's part that when dealing directly with a current customer they can't compete. If Orange sell direct to me they don't have to pay the kick back to the phone shop, and the phone shop will still be making a profit.

The problem is the agent you talk to can't just make up contracts. They're all preset on the computer.
Even upgrades and retentions have limits, any offer is based on your worth as customer, which in turn is worked out on your spend in the last 6 month.
The more you've spent the better the offers the system will permit. That why people get different offers when they're on the same tariff, no two customers spend are going to be the same.

Fair enough but looking through this thread people do negotiate. From my point of view they had a chance of getting a teenager on board who will over the next few years become a long term customer if he gets the right deal. At the same age my daughter got a contract, again due to her age it started off in my name as I was paying, five years on she has increased the package several times and they have a loyal customer. Just seems shortsighted of Orange. As well as failing to sell me a contract for my son they will also lose me at renewal time.

Bit of a contradiction here. You are criticising Orange for not doing more to secure a new and potentially valuable customer in your son, but are then saying that you don't feel like a valued customer because of that. Surely the whole point is that you and your son are separate customers. I know why as a parent you are frustrated with Orange, but as a customer they haven't negatively affected you as far as I can see. Leaving Orange on principle when they will (more than likely) offer you a superior deal through retentions is a prime example of cutting off your nose to spite your face.

On retention deals people negotiate. As a purely new customer your bargaining power is nearly non existent. Hence why there was no movement in this case.

yet all they can offer is substandard phone, 500 texts , 800 mins for £25 on an 18 month contract

Son is at school and too young to take contract out so it would be in my name but they know it is for him so it is actually for an existing customer but also getting a new customer for the future. As I said in a previous post Vodafone took the long view with my daughter, gave me a great deal for her as a young teenager, she is still a customer now as a university student with a bigger package.

Looking at what they are offering I don't feel like I will be losing anything.

Loyalty doesn't seem to count for much. For my son we are thinking of going with virgin or vodafone. Have been offered a good package by virgin that seems ideal for the circumstances but I will speak to Vodafone tomorrow as they have always been good with my daughter. Maybe I should have a look at O2 as well.
