It gets me when bread for example says best before.  Lets say yesterday with ..best before 27 Feb, surely that means up to 26 Feb ie day before, so on 27th its past its best and should be reduced in price or am I being thick?

It's best before end date, though they don't seem to put the word end in anymore, so can see why it is confusing.  So it is best before the end of 27 Feb in your example.

Is it though?  If an item states that it’s best before 27 February, the only possible interpretation of that is that it’s not at its best on 27 February.

Had the £2.49 Vindaloo with rice from Aldi yesterday and the flavour was really good, not the fieriest I have ever had but amazing for the price. It was actually much better than the recent ones from Morrisons, M&S and Sainsburys.

My local Lidl was giving away excess bakery stock today (presumably over-ordered for the Feb bakery promotion).

They had devised an in-store equivalent to the Spin of Surprises to determine which treat you'd get.
That is good to know! The last time they ran this promotion I ended up shopping there daily. This time I haven't set foot inside the store and will hold off until the weekend now.
    Ends tomorrow?
Yes - the last thing I need is to stuff myself with these goodies so am staying away on purpose.

Don't know if anyone can throw any light on this or whether it's all Lidl's?
When I went 2 weeks ago to our small Lidl, there was no Bellarom original coffee (square jar, brown lid).
When I went this week, there was still none and there was no Bellarom rich roast (red lid).

To me that signals a price rise is imminent. (Run down stock - create demand - reintroduce at a higher price knowing customers need to restock).

Best before dates are about quality

The best before date, sometimes shown as BBE (best before end), is about quality and not safety. After the best before date listed on a product, the food will be safe to eat but may not be at its best.

I imagine most people here are well aware of that. The discussion was simply about the meaning of the words ‘Best Before’ as against ‘Best Before End’.

Bought Cherry Tomatoes at Aldi - when I opened most were mouldy - won't do that again tather pay a bit more and be able to keep for 7 days without deterioration.  Opened day of purchase.  But not obvious looking through plastic when buying.

(Should have listened t posts that said veg wasn't prticularly long lived)

Only tomatoes we've had problems with lately, I think from Lidl, were some on the vine ones you buy loose.  Not masses of flavour but fine for frying for breakfast.  BUT the seeds were sprouting so to my squeamish OH they looked like they were full of little green worms.  No way to tell in advance that would be the case and nothing actually wrong with them really.  Probably should have put them in the garden to see if anything came from it rather than chucking away.
