Thanks for your comments regarding Aldi/Lidl 250gr cocoa powder, Rosa_Damascena.  Does anybody know if the prices for both differ?  Don't know if my sources are up to date.

    Thanks.

Recently spotted the wine prices in Aldi, and some deals are very good. Just picked up a (hopefully drinkable) Chilean Merlot (2023) for £3.99. For those with more refined tastes, they have a 2015 Bordeaux (Chateau Pomone) for £9.99, reduced from £19.99. I might get a couple, as I love a decent Bordeaux.

Also: the "saver" pork belly slices are decent. A little on the fatty side, though for pork belly, that's no bad thing.
Chilean wine is usually pretty decent.  Much better IMHO then anything that you'll get from California or Australia/NZ.  Might not be up to the best of the French but on par with eastern European of a higher cost.

I'd be rushing out to get either of your finds if I still drank reds.  But will go and have a look just in case they have any whites - again Chilean or Argentina whites are good.  Or if you're really lucky Aldi will have some Canadians in - the Niagara area has some of the best German style whites including best in the world icewines.

p.s. for those of you who don't know or drink red wines but feel you have to buy some for Christmas or whenever... here's my trick.  Decide your maximum price be it £5 or £25.  Then look at the alcohol content.  A decent red wine in general will have a higher alcohol content as it will taste more robust.  This is more obvious in the cheaper ones.  But if you see a red that is 11% I'd say avoid at all costs.  If it's 13%+ it's worth a try as it's bound to be  a good meaty flavour.  Just be sure that you're not actually buying a sweet red which is more likely to be much higher maybe 17%.
You might have converted me to dark chocolate but you sure ain't going to get any 180s from me in regards to your description of red red wine.

Mind you, many decades ago a friend who was even more staunch vegetarian than myself travelled around Argentina for a month and ended up eating meat. She couldn't find any vegetables and got sick of eating white bread.

Shall I change the phrase to "good robust flavour"?  As I understand it very little wine (red or white) is vegetarian so.....   then again in mass production the old fashion method of filtering via finings is likely on it's way out.

Can't remember what board I was on and tried to explain why I didn't like Californian, Aussie or NZ white wine and the only phrase I could dredge up out of the wine lexicon was that they were too "foxy".  And when asked to explain that I said they taste like sweaty gym socks.  Not sure a vegetarian would like that either!!!

I picked up a couple of bottles of Lidl "Morgon" at the weekend. It is a Cru village Beaujolais from just North of Lyon. It was £4.99, 13% and is very rounded, very good with red meat (lamb shanks in our case). Very much a bargain, usually £7.99. Here is a review from a few years ago.

Has anyone tried these Lidl jellies and can tell me if they are any good or not?

I liked them when I had them a year or two back.  But that doesn't mean they are the same.  Do let me know if you go for them as I'd much prefer fruit jellies to chocolates generally.

The Aldi 200g Alcafe coffee has come down in price to £1.79.  Nice to see something reducing in price.

    Another price reduction at Aldi:

    - The "family" pack of medium quality ham with 14 round slices down from c. £2.29 to £1.69.   Includes plain ham, honey roast, smoked and breaded.   Not sure if it includes the Chicken & Turkey varieties as my Aldi didn't have any.

I can see that Lidl has a range of Christmas goodies on offer, which in contrast to pre-pandemic are genuinely priced as treats rather than everyday scoffables.

I bought some of these last month - intended to fill the larger boxes on an advent calendar, but actually too large so I filled the Christmas candy bowl early. I wasn't expecting much, but they are like Ferrero Rocher (and IMO, tastier): https://imgproxy-retcat.assets.schwarz/MQ4JX03TMt4CtKq-cvUivVW3lou-6GrUk4PLeXRQrFQ/sm:1/w:1500/h:1125/cz/M6Ly9wcm9kLWNhd/GFsb2ctbWVkaWEvdWsvMS8zRDNEQkZEQ0RCRjg5MkM5RDI4MDQyRkI/0RDAwOTRFNEI3MUQ1NzBFQTk0MEI0MjY1RUJENTVENzJFQkM1OEJFLmpwZw.jpg

Has anyone tried the blonde variety?: https://www.lidl.co.uk/p/favorina-crispy-chocolate-balls-blonde-chocolate/p10019263

ETA: Not sure what is going on with the image link atm? Hyperlinks will have to do!

I hadn't seen your post before I went but got them anyway.
The flavours seem quite nice but I find them a little too sweet, even though I like sweet.
