Don't people realise they don't have to use the pump on the same side of their car's fuel cap?

A Tesco garage refused to serve me a few years ago when I parked on the opposite side of the fuel pump. I haven't used Tesco garages since.

Didn’t seem to bother this guy;...that’s the kind of service we need to bring back! 😁

Do you think finance/lease companies accept that explanation too when returning the car with scratches?

Having a two seater with a long boot it was relatively easy to get the hose to the other side but meant the boot got covered in grime... not the end of the world but prefer to stick to the right side unless there are big queues
I think you're grossly exaggerating the effect of the hose on paint TBH.
A: The hoses are fitted with 'rubber rings' that slid down the hose and act as a buffer between the hose and paint
B: It's very easy to hold the hose away from the paint with one hand and fill with the other.
C; Lease companies don't punish micro scratches.

Seems an awful lot of effort getting tarted up like that just to have some bloke put petrol in my car.

All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

    1) I didn't say they damage paint, Fred246 said that if they do scratch your car then you can still drive your car which was a rather flippant response to peoples concern especially as they acknowledged that they can cause damage
    2) My comment was that they made the car's boot lid dirty... I disagree that was a gross exaggeration

    A) Not at the stations around here

    B) Depends on the pump design/hose length etc.. certainly some of the self retracting ones are very difficult to as often at max length of the pipe and there's a reasonable amount of recoil for like the Mrs to hold it for a minute or two up in the air far enough across the boot to keep it off the far side

    C) Repeating that my comment wasn't that it can cause scratches but if you accept other's statements that it can then the combined impact of 4 years of weekly filling could exceed the limit

    How?

I assume you mean, you were waiting for the pump to be authorised but, normally, all the cashier can see in that process is that you are there and not wearing crash helmet etc. (so less likely to fuel-and-run).  I don't think they can see the fuel cap clearly and certainly the cashier won't remember every fueling point for every car.  Unless they said that the reason was wrong side over the Tannoy, I think you can assume it was some other reason.

Unless you were standing ready like the lady with the Mini:

I can't work out if he's managed to get his long hose stuck between the young lady's legs.

I have had that happen (not Tesco) and they refused to start the pump.
The don't need to know every fueling point. If they see you standing at the car on the opposite side to the pump then it tends to give the game away.

I'll chirp in here... I decided to do this once, I was driving someone else's car at the time so parked at the wrong side to the petrol cap.
I grabbed the hose and pulled it over the car....it didn't reach, turns out this Tesco garage didn't have long hoses.

Never done it again because I looked like a right idiot.

I just fill up at quiet times e.g early morning or late night and avoid fuel forecourts during rush hour times.

Oh and I'm sick of hearing people say that ALL cars have an arrow pointing where the fuel flap is. FALSE - my previous 3 cars never had such arrow.

I would like to assure those who are worried about the hose scratching their car. In the very unlikely event that a scratch did occur the car would continue to function exactly as expected. It would continue to take the passengers and luggage to it's destination.
I bet you're one of those folks who slam their door into the car parked next to you at the supermarket and then say it's only a car.
