Don't people realise they don't have to use the pump on the same side of their car's fuel cap?

I would like to assure those who are worried about the hose scratching their car. In the very unlikely event that a scratch did occur the car would continue to function exactly as expected. It would continue to take the passengers and luggage to it's destination.
Some people like their car to maintain the appearance of well cared for as well.

Reminds me of a time many years ago regarding fuelling from “other side”. Hastily returning to Gatwick from east Kent to catch a flight north we realised we still had to fuel the hire car. Colleague pulled in at the first pump despite being told flap was on other side. We don’t have time to move  he said. Proceeded to drench himself in petrol when filling the car.

The comments we heard from other passengers when we joined the check-in, security queues were priceless :D . The looks he got in the airport when explaining the problem. I’m glad I was not sitting beside him on the return journey. I recall the flight attendant got him an empty seat.

Well you know what the answer is......just get your butler or chauffeur to fill up for you.    Sorted.
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

    😂

Hope that wasn’t back in the day when you could still light-up cigarettes on flights;...he may have lit-up in a way he didn’t intend. 😱

My car doesn't have a removable filler cap and most hoses round here won't pull far enough to allow the nozzle to go in at the right angle. It if doesn't go all the way in then it won't work. Bit of a pain and I've always used either side until I got this car, so now I can either pull up, try it and move if it's not long enough or wait a few mins and know it'll fit first time without dripping fuel over my car.
Same, capless filler, so needs a certain angle and nozzle needs to go all the way to activate the fuel otherwise it's stop/start, once I had the nozzle stuck inside took some force to get it out!

Do people not realise drivers have a free choice as to what they use and if they want to queue up for a certain pump they can do so.

The only consequence to the OP is they can fill up sooner.

Do you think finance/lease companies accept that explanation too when returning the car with scratches?

Having a two seater with a long boot it was relatively easy to get the hose to the other side but meant the boot got covered in grime... not the end of the world but prefer to stick to the right side unless there are big queues

The solution is simple - all cars should be mandated to have two gas tanks:

A Tesco garage refused to serve me a few years ago when I parked on the opposite side of the fuel pump. I haven't used Tesco garages since.
