Don't people realise they don't have to use the pump on the same side of their car's fuel cap?

If you've entered your card details in 'pay at pump' and then find the pipe won't reach it might be a hassle; don't want the next car filling up on your card.

Which leads to the further question of how to manufacturers decide on which side the filler cap will be on.
Why aren’t they all in the same side ? (Obv something to do with the design)
Do Ford,BMW,Nissan etc take one side then Audi,Vauxhall,VW etc take the other.

OP your opening a whole can or worms here
Why do women drivers fill the car up then rummage in car for handbag then when at till franticly search bag for purse/card sometimes after buying a basket of shopping in the petrol forecourt shop
Why do people when checking tyres spend ages taking each dust cap off checking tyre replacing dust cap and so on.......take all 4 dust caps off insert coin check all 4 tyres then replace dust caps

I've got two vehicles from the same manufacturer, built within a couple of years of each other. They're on opposite sides.0 -
It may be that the filler cap and exhaust are on the "safe" sides according to where the car was designed, filler cap kerbside and exhaust tailpipe road side.

If you are in an unfamilliar car, and need to stop for fuel, the fuel gauge has a little arrow that points to the side where the filler is.(Took me many years to realise this, as I never drive other cars)I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

Some do. Not all.facade said:If you are in an unfamilliar car, and need to stop for fuel, the fuel gauge has a little arrow that points to the side where the filler is.(Took me many years to realise this, as I never drive other cars)
And, no, the "handle on the icon on the fuel gauge" isn't a universal, either.0 -
The hose can put nasty scratches in the paint or even in glass if it is dragged across the windscreen, same as jetwash hoses.0

If they were all on the same side we'd all be queuing at the same side of the pump island and the other side would be empty.JamoLew said:Which leads to the further question of how to manufacturers decide on which side the filler cap will be on.

With Volvo the filler cap is always on the driver's side.Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.0 -
No, it isn't.
With most Volvo cars worldwide, it's on the passenger side.0
