Don't people realise they don't have to use the pump on the same side of their car's fuel cap?

Every German based car I've driven has always had the petrol cap on the driver's side, until I drove my dad's VW Caddy where the cap is on the opposite side. So no real hard and fast rules.JamoLew said:Which leads to the further question of how to manufacturers decide on which side the filler cap will be on.
Why aren’t they all in the same side ? (Obv something to do with the design)
Do Ford,BMW,Nissan etc take one side then Audi,Vauxhall,VW etc take the other.0 -
If you park car correctly next to pump the hose will hang at back of carburma_shave said:The hose can put nasty scratches in the paint or even in glass if it is dragged across the windscreen, same as jetwash hoses.2 -
Depends how old the cars are. Up until 2010 Volvo was owned by Ford and as such the caps were generally on the passenger side, as is the case with most Ford cars, but since they're now owned by Geely the caps have moved over to the driver's side.AdrianC said:
No, it isn't.
With most Volvo cars worldwide, it's on the passenger side.0 -
My local Tesco filling station has a sign which says "Long hoses. Use both lanes".0

I think you might be missing my point...neilmcl said:

The filler cap is always on the RH side.
The RH side is not the driver's side for most worldwide.0 -
Oh, you were just being a smart "alec" 😉AdrianC said:

Although my point still stands, it's not always been on the RH side.1 -
I have never come across one of those garages that insist you fill up on the filler side ,I fill up 3 times a week and nearly always use the "wrong" side to avoid the queues. it is slightly harder to position the car (estate).unforeseen said:There are some garages that insist you use the pump on the filler side.
I have also come across pumps where the pipes are intentionally too short to reach across the car.
For those 2 reasons, I always go for the pump on the filler side.0 -
I wonder how many drivers know that on modern cars there is a tiny arrow under the fuel gauge indicating the side that the filler cap is on.1

I'll happily queue! New car and its well looked after. Don't want a hose touching it! Plus I remember recently at our local Shell, a motorist getting told off over the tannoy for stretching the hose over the car!0
