We have the same roblem as you do. OK with their Smartac router, but not with the Netgear wireless router. All was ok from July, when it was installed, until Nov 21st. Since then it's been patchy and I've spent too long on the phone to them. It's driving me nuts.
Apparently you need a Netgear version 3. Ours is version 1. So I went and bought a version 3 but it hasn't cured the problem, so I returned it to Argos. Then tried a Belkin and that didn't cure it either. Back to the old Netgear now and at the minute it seems to be ok.
I think it's not to do with the router, but is due to some line condition. Talking to them I kinda get the impression that they don't want to do much. I will press them further if it goes on much longer.
Before TT we had BT with Zen broadband. Not a minutes trouble with it. If TT cannot provide the service that they promised to, I will be insisting that we are released from the contract without penalty and I'll also be wanting them to pay for reconnection to BT. I think that is reasonable and I would treat is as their breach of contract to supply the service promised.0 -

Right then, please see my post #7 and talk me through this problem which persists.
I have a Smartac modem and a Netgear wireless router. Connecting with the Smartac seems to be ok at the moment. But when I connect the Netgear it drops the broadband service frequently. It worked with the Netgear from July, the point of changing to TalkTalk and November 21st. Since then it has been appalling. Why is this?
I went out and bought another Netgear router, but still no joy. Returned that and got a Belkin, even worse. Now using the Smartac and all seems to be ok. Trouble is, that only one of us can be online at once. So I want the wireless router working ideally.0 -
Hello Steve_XX
Looking at this from the point of view of "Line Fault/Line Issues" there isn't really any reason for one modem to work and another not to work however some modems are better than others, customers who have a long line have noticed some modems work but others don't. Also you could have some form of a fault with your line?
Do you know if it is the Signal or Authentication that is dropping? Also you said that the Huawei Smartec Modem you are using is working ok, are you still getting a dropping signal or authentication with this modem?
Thanks“Official Company Representative

The point is that the Netgear worked for almost 2 years when connected to BT and Zen broadband. It worked ok with TalkTalk from July to November 21st, then the problems started.
It works fine with the Smartac, seemingly. Though the speeds are not brilliant, seldom attaining more than 1mb. However, the speed thing isnt an issue and I'm ok with 1mb if it is consistent and doesn't drop. I know that TT specify version 3 of the Netgear router and so I went out and bought one of these, but as I said earlier, this did not resolve the issue.
How would I know whether there is authentication or signal failure?
I get the feeling that when I call TT second line support that they are unwilling to act to resolve. I feel that there is a line condition, though TT says that the signal to noise ratio, when they tested it, was acceptable. But, these conditions can alter and there may be times when the SNR is altered and so causing loss of broadband service.
I think I realise that if TT have to initiate any work at an exchange then money will become payable from TT to BT. I can see that TT are seeking to aviod such charging.0 -
