The first thing that I would do is uninstall any TalkTalk software that you have installed as no software is required to communicate with your router using an Ethernet connection. Check your LAN in Control Panel, Network Connections. Re-installing their software has probably messed things up!

What do you mean powering down? Switching off?

When you say "it clearly does" what do you mean?

Have you checked the Ethernet adapter in Device Manager? Maybe it is that which is at fault. Try uninstalling/reinstalling it.

Well still can't get access  Tried to re-install network adapter but still no joy

I tried accessing 192.168.1.1 with another modem (belkin wireless router but connecting it to my pc with ethernet) tried pinging 192.168.1.1 in run>cmd>enter screen and it is failing on all 4 packets (with both modems)

What i don't get is 10 days ago everything was fine.

Any ideas what might be the problem checked for viruses switched off my firewalls and still no joy! Really frustrating.

I don't know whether it is my computer or talktalk but i think it might be the computer.

Do you think it would be worthwhile picking up a pci network adapter to see if that helps as they are pretty cheap.

Well it's obviously not TalkTalk if you can't communicate with any router over your Ethernet port! Check that your LAN driver is installed correctly and that the TCP/IP settings are correct. Check that both Obtain buttons are checked (IP address and DNS server) Click on the Troubleshooting button. Until your Ethernet is working again, you won't get very far.

P.S. When you tried the Belkin router, did you check what it's IP address was? Don't assume that all routers are 192.168.1.1 and most Belkins are 192.168.2.1

  • If i still have no joy (as won't be able to do those checks till I get home) do you think it is worthwhile buying a pci ethernet port and installing that (as they are less than £10)? It won't conflict with the suspected broken one that is built into my mother board will it?

Don't know if is related but had some trouble with my chip set fan failing (which is now working)?
  • We have had this exact problem with talktalk in the last week, the net goes down for a couple of hours like you said but this time it went down completely and has not since come back up. Our router was reset and no matter what we do we cant connect! So your not alone!

I think talktalk have some serious issues!

We are going to be just cancelling our internet cause talktalk is a waste of time and unreliable!
  • From what youve said it is your PC not TalkTalk at fault here. If you are unable to ping and open the http://192.168.1.1 address to get to the router there must either be:

    a. incorrect TCP/IP settings on your PC
    b. Firewall or security software (usually norton and macaffee block routers by accident and for no apparent reason)
    c. A virus
    d. Faulty Network card (although i dought this very much, ive only experienced probably one in the 1.5 years ive worked for talktalk).

Sending a new router to you will be of no benefit as youve tried with 3 already, the only thing it could be is the PC setup. Try uninstalling the firewall, simply disableing does not stop it from blocking ports with Norton and Macaffee, see if you can then connect(enable the windows firewall and download AVG Free from Grisoft to protect you from viruses).

Personally i would say its a firewall issue. and then second most likely would be incorrect TCP/IP settings (should be set to automaticlly detect settings).

Set TCP/IP to automatically detect settings
Have AVG installed and checked for viruses which there are none
    Disabled and unistalled firewalls

So that leaves the network adapted on my motherboard, so do you think i should try replace it?

  DITTO OVER 14 DAYS NOW
Don't sweat the small stuff, Its all small stuff.
  • It's prbably much to late but I had the same thing and had to do an XP system restore to get it working again.

A couple of days later I got the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon on the taskbar - it was refering to the MT882 modem so I restored again.

I haven't a clue what causes it. I never had any issues with my ADSL modem though.
