Yup, SP have created a ddm on my bank account. No date, no amount just a reference. If that 'reference' is my new account number does that mean my account is set up at SP and thus I could start my switch to another energy provider?
No, you can check the national database through your local energy distributor. Direct debits are often set up well in advance of a supply being taken over. It will be a minimum of 14 days from YE going bust before SP completes the takeover.
Edit: looks like the reference is your account number, so you can use that to set up your online account and track your switch.

Seems my account with SP goes live 30 December, as advised by SP  when phoning them on 08005593309, and the reference IS my new account number. So I can't initiate a switch until 30 December?
Who I pay in December a mystery as it seems I've no account with SP and YE have ceased trading!

Under industry rules, SP will bill you for energy from 7th December, as mentioned earlier in the thread. That's why they asked for a meter reading in the initial registration form.

When you register an online account using your new account number you'll see the switch completion date. The date you can initiate a switch away from SP will depend on the date SP gain your supply on the national database - another supplier will not be able to take over your supply until 28 days after the national database is updated to show SP as your supplier. You will need to time the switch application to take into account a 14 day cooling off period. I would guess w/c 4th January if SP gain our supplies on w/c 21st December. Some providers are slower to set things in motion than others, so it will not be an exact science.

As per the other 28 day thread, we just need to time any applications to switch such that a new transfer date has to be at least 28 days after the last database switches (from YE to SP).  And if a new transfer date would mean the number of days is less than 28 (inc the cooling off period) then any switch would probably be automatically rejected by 'the system'.  Here's hoping that SP is on the ball re the database update requests!  You would have thought that Ofgem would create an automatic (and faster) update of supply details in situations arising from the appointment of an SOLR!

If you et up an account with the ref/account number then login you will see when SP intend to take the DD mine says 22nd December
Why should they take a payment when the account is not going live till the 30th December, if what you are told is correct

It is acceptable for a supplier to start collecting on a direct debit before they start billing you for energy. In this case, SP started billing us from 7th December, so a payment taken on 22nd (which is the same date I have on my online account) does not seem out of the ordinary. On my last SoLR switch, payment was collected on the same sort of timescale.
There does seem to be a conflation between the billing start date, the date SP will gain our supply and the date our accounts will go live (live presumably meaning viewable online). These will all be different dates.

I'm certainly willing to hear any strategies to time the process, as last time I had to do this I applied to switch over a week before my new supplier was able to successfully apply for the supply (SoLR gained supply on 24th December, but switches out were rejected until 14th Jan, final attempt resulted in a switch date of 22nd Jan). Fortunately, they were willing to keep trying until it eventually worked. Others might not do such a good job of making sure the switch goes through.

From what I read online, I should be able to check electricity supplier through the Distribution Network operator website, but there is no link on the Western Power Distribution website: https://www.westernpower.co.uk/ (if you scroll down there is a "Who is a supplier" icon, but no link. Am I being dense?

As it happens I'm served by WPD too. Last time I had to do a site search. The page you are looking for is: https://www.westernpower.co.uk/customers-and-community/meter-point-administration-service
Click the 'Find out more' button on the right. Not really any point in checking before the start of next week. There hasn't been enough time yet for SP to have gained the supply.

Or a direct link at https://supplier.westernpower.co.uk/
    It still says Yorkshire Energy.

Thanks for the hints here, I logged in using my old SP details (left in 2015) and found that my direct debit is set for the 25th, for the amount I entered when I gave them DD details and the meter reading and that my account is marked as "switching". So looking good so far.
My YE account shows a credit balance as the DD went in on the 27th November so I shouldn't be dealing with the administrators (assuming they don't mess up).
