Holy Carp!! That deemed tariff works out at a whopping £242 p.a. more than what I was paying YE....I knew it was going to be a fair bit more, but that much? Rip-off merchants, they've just confirmed it again...
Yorkshire Energy went bust because every tariff was priced below cost.... It's not ripping customers off it's giving them a tariff which doesn't end in them going bust within 2 years....

Most suppliers going bust are the cheap ones... coincidence?
All you need to do is switch to another cheap supplier ASAP, then wait until they go bust in a year or 2 and then switch again - simples.
  • I only found out about this last night when I got an email from Scottish Power. I was really shocked and had no idea. Yorkshire Energy have been one of the better energy suppliers I have ever been with. My Fixed Rate tarriff which was a really good one was due to end in September this year. They offered to let me have this for another year along with a lovely bonus of £40 which would be paid to me in January 2021. I can probably say goodbye to that then!!
Will definitely not be staying with Scottish Power.

As I've said before, until we see the final accounts, we can't assume that YE went broke because it undercharged. For all we know the company wasted money or did a hundred other things companies do that lead to their demise.

As for other smaller companies, without knowing the inner workings of the industry, it's impossible to be sure whether they are collapsing due to low prices, unfair treatment from their suppliers, regulatory problems or something else..

The energy market in the UK is so bent out of shape with subsidies and other governmental interference that a simple cost/selling price analysis is almost certain to be wrong.

I have received the same email from SP.I have also received a email from YE stating-

Please call us to reinstate your direct debit as soon as possible as, without an adequate direct debit in place, your account will build up debt and you may face a penalty for any further failed payments.I cancelled the direct debit this morning.I am not going to pay two direct debits.Anyway i have over £250 in credit so i am definitely not going to reinstate the YE direct debit. This is not going to go very smooth i fear.I shall be switching away from SP as soon as i can.I will make a new direct debit with SP.

You had better reinstate it as it's also used to pay your credit back, unless that balance is automatically credited to SP
It's transferred to SP if you read the notice on their site, YE have gone so it's the Administrators who are in control and they wont worry about refunding your credit only chasing those that owe YE

Anyone know if SP put me on a similar plan (fixed) but more expensive, will they wave the early exit fee if  I choose to go to another supplier? After all SP is not my choice?
Yes, as I understand it SP is putting us all on a variable tariff with no exit fee. Whatever you do it would be a good idea to get onto a fixed tariff, whether with SP or elsewhere, as soon as possible.
As I understand it we are being put on a fixed "special" tariff and there will be no exit fees SLoR's are not allowed to charge exit fees

So I checked my YE tariff against the new Scottish Power tariff. Economy7 meter looks like the night rate has infact gone down by 0.5p! On the flip side of that however is that the day rate has increased massively (13p ->21p)! Looking at a £30 a month increase with my usage.
I wonder do they check the meter reads you provide? It would be a terrible mistake if I accidentally entered a day rate a couple hundred units higher than actual so that I pay the YE rate rather than the new rate!
I agree, I'm on Economy 7 but in fact my night use is a small percentage - something between 20 and 25%. The YE tariff meant I pretty much broke even on where I'd have been on single rate. I used to do the sums and sometimes I saved a few pence, other times I might have been down by a few pence but the discrepancy either way was so small that it wasn't worth worrying about and over a year it was largely flat.  The SP tariff is much more heavily skewed so that I will lose out badly. I shan't be staying on it for long.
  • Just had a look at the tarriffs as directed on page 21. Firstly cannot work out if I am North Scotland or South (I am actually in Central Scotland) as the map is not clear where the line is. Also there are £0.00 standing charges on these tarriffs, is that correct?
I did a quote on their website and my payment would increase from £65 per month to £120 per month  :open_mouth:

  • Does anyone know for certain what tariff we are being put on all I can see is
""If you’re a domestic customer, you’ll move to our Energy Exclusive tariff - this is a tariff created specifically for former customers of Yorkshire Energy and provides some of our most competitive prices. We’ll shortly be sending you a personalised ‘welcome pack’ (via email or letter) which includes your tariff prices""

Have your put your E7 meter readings in yet?  There appears on the face of it to be nothing to suggest which box is day or night rate. I have absolutely no confidence in SP as when we got our house back from a tenant, he had switched to SP so I've had dealings with them before. Our meters were being billed during the day at night rate and night rate in the daytime. Only using about 25% at night (no storage heaters), I could have just let the situation continue as we were getting cheap daytime leccy, but I didn't want this to be an issue years down the line. However, SP took no notice of my request. I moved to another supplier (I forget who now, Robin Hood trading as something else?) who were equally inept in sorting the issue which ended up with me going to Ofgem to get my meter readings swapped round in the end.   Given SP will have previous meter readings in their system from when I was a customer last year, I can see them swapping them back.  If that happens.........I may just not bother to fight it!

  • What a shame. YE were brilliant, quick to answer the phone and monthly bills online within an hour of giving the meter readings. I had a fixed price until Sept 2021 and have a large credit balance at the moment anticipating winter usage. Have been with Scottish Power once before, never again, they are dreadful. Will have to do some homework. Can anyone recommend a good, reliable supplier with reasonable prices.
