  • I too received the email from Scottish but am mulling when (this week) I am going to give the details over.  Without a doubt all of us (now) former Yorkshire customers will be on a worse tariff with Scottish Power although, to be fair, we would be on a worse deal with all the major suppliers.  Once we have gone onto this deemed 'exclusive' contract and 'the system' sees us as a SCOTTISH customer I strongly suspect that the cheaper exclusive SCOTTISH deals (available through comparison websites) will not be available to us because we are not then a new customer!  But even if we are able to get on these cheaper exclusives the issue rears its ugly head whenever the exclusive runs out - crazy.  But at least the deemed contract will allow us to leave without paying exit fees should we choose to do so.

There are very few suppliers out there who are offering the same tariff to both new AND existing customers but at least there are some for those that wish to do their research.

As a former customer of Breeze, I am ready for the snail-like progress that this will all take if I choose to exercise my option to move to a new supplier away from SCOTTISH once the initial transfer has been completed.  I was due fro a small refund from Breeze last year but the administrators took their time before British Gas had the funds moved for customers with credit balances.  It took 4-5 months before I received this refund by cheque (1st May 2020).  This was the reason I stopped my DD to YORKSHIRE as my credit balance would be even higher.

I have received the same email from SP.I have also received a email from YE stating-

Please call us to reinstate your direct debit as soon as possible as, without an adequate direct debit in place, your account will build up debt and you may face a penalty for any further failed payments.I cancelled the direct debit this morning.I am not going to pay two direct debits.Anyway i have over £250 in credit so i am definitely not going to reinstate the YE direct debit. This is not going to go very smooth i fear.I shall be switching away from SP as soon as i can.I will make a new direct debit with SP.

You had better reinstate it as it's also used to pay your credit back, unless that balance is automatically credited to SP
It is not possible for a customer to reinstate a DD. It can only be done by YE and YE is in no position to do it. The balance is automatically transferred to SP. Since SP is going to set up a new DD (they are asking for bank details) there is no issue with cancelling the YE DD. For those who were leaving before YE went under, they can safely cancel their DD. The Joint Administrator's won't be using that to eventually refund them.

So I checked my YE tariff against the new Scottish Power tariff. Economy7 meter looks like the night rate has infact gone down by 0.5p! On the flip side of that however is that the day rate has increased massively (13p ->21p)! Looking at a £30 a month increase with my usage.
I wonder do they check the meter reads you provide? It would be a terrible mistake if I accidentally entered a day rate a couple hundred units higher than actual so that I pay the YE rate rather than the new rate!
All meter reads are validated by the Universal Supplier Service, and if they fall outside of a tolerance range they will be rejected as a likely mistyped reading, and an estimate used instead. So if you overdo it, you could end up in a worse position than if you'd submitted your actual readings.

I was with Yorkshire energy and have received email asking me to set up account with Scottish Power. Two questions, I have just set up transfer through MSE to change to SO energy as recommended, will this mess things up. I am also £486.14 in credit will Yorkshire Energy refund me or Scottish Power?

I agree, I'm on Economy 7 but in fact my night use is a small percentage - something between 20 and 25%. The YE tariff meant I pretty much broke even on where I'd have been on single rate. I used to do the sums and sometimes I saved a few pence, other times I might have been down by a few pence but the discrepancy either way was so small that it wasn't worth worrying about and over a year it was largely flat.  The SP tariff is much more heavily skewed so that I will lose out badly. I shan't be staying on it for long.

Have your put your E7 meter readings in yet?  There appears on the face of it to be nothing to suggest which box is day or night rate. I have absolutely no confidence in SP as when we got our house back from a tenant, he had switched to SP so I've had dealings with them before. Our meters were being billed during the day at night rate and night rate in the daytime. Only using about 25% at night (no storage heaters), I could have just let the situation continue as we were getting cheap daytime leccy, but I didn't want this to be an issue years down the line. However, SP took no notice of my request. I moved to another supplier (I forget who now, Robin Hood trading as something else?) who were equally inept in sorting the issue which ended up with me going to Ofgem to get my meter readings swapped round in the end.   Given SP will have previous meter readings in their system from when I was a customer last year, I can see them swapping them back.  If that happens.........I may just not bother to fight it!

Haven't got round to it yet however I had an exchange with YE about this as my meter, which has the capacity to show five different rates, shows the night rate as 1 and the day rate as 2. However I have always submitted them the other way round. I can't remember how this started - possibly when I first did it online and previous readings (as taken by meter readers) were already shown and I just continued. Anyway when I became a Yorkshire customer I sent them a message to say that I had continued as before but in fact my meter showed the rates the other way round, and they replied to say that I was doing the right thing. In practice there is no real risk of confusion in my case as the readings are wildly different so anyone putting them in the wrong way round would be able to work out what the problem was. I presume the confusion arises where the two different readings are similar.

Your switch will probably fail if it has only just been requested. It is not recommended to start a switch after a supplier has gone under. However, if it was started long enough ago, then it would go through and you should still get your refund from SP. It all depends on who gets round to claiming your supply the quickest - new supplier or SP.

You can still log in to YE and access your bills, these will have a record of your previous meter reads. Mine show 'Day (01)' and 'Night (02)'. If you do put them in an inconsistent way round and they are significantly different values, then most likely the read will be rejected and you'll get a final bill based on estimated values.
  • My  neighbour has just had a conversation with SP re costings on the Exclusive energy tarriff (northern area).  They have told her they don't know how much they are going to charge BUT it will be comparable to what we have been paying YE.  The CSA has no idea when we will be informed but eventually we'll get an email with the prices.  Surely the question most people will be asking is 'how much', it's certainly priority for us.
