Can My Daughter Leave Wales For Essential Training ?

I would agree, my microwave is actually in a cupboard in the kitchen, I have probably only used it twice this year, the hob and oven get daily use though.Grumpy_chap said:
I will concede running water and electricity are modern day essentials.Dr_Crypto said:People lived without running water or the internet or electricity too. It doesn't mean they aren't essential now.
I'd say a microwave was pretty essential
Internet, as much of a modern-day distraction as essential
I cannot concur with you regarding the microwave. We are not so stone-age as to have shunned the microwave, but the one in our house is probably used half-a-dozen times a year, if that. Definitely not an essential.0 -
Re microwaves - and I deliberately got rid of one myself years back and don't want one.
But - that's me with a normal kitchen/normal kitchen facilities etc and I eat "properly" (well I did until March 2020 - when it went out of the window until Lockdown Depression lifts - whenever that turns out to be...next year by the look of it).
People with inadequate cooking facilities probably do actually need microwaves - as they may not have a full-size cooker and/or might have a recalcitrant landlord/lady that won't give it a necessary repair. Hence microwave being a necessity for them - in order to be able to manage to have hot food at all.
I know I'd be okay whatever - because I've got that proper kitchen with full-size cooker and it's down to me (being my cooker) that it's okay. Failing that - the dual electric hotplate I bought on moving to "house needing lots of work" or my crockpot or my dehydrator or or or.....
But lots of people aren't and can't be as well-prepared. So - just because it isn't a necessity for me personally - doesn't mean to say it's not one for other people.0 -
I always keep a pile of sticks for emergency, so if the need arises I can rub two together for instant heat, light, and cooking. Even lightbulbs are not essential given my stock of candles.1

They probably still scan at self service. If they dont, leave the cost of it behind and walk out.MoneySeeker1 said:
Quite - I know I "could" have managed without a replacement for a breadbaking tin that "gave up the ghost" on me - but ordered/already received from Amazon. I could have waited till the bookshops were open again to buy a Bible I decided I'd better get again (years after chucking out last one - but I want to read the Book of Revelations and compare/contrast to 2020 right now) and that's already come through from Amazon.Jeremy535897 said:
It seems to be based on a misconception that people will wait to buy the non-essential item, and as you say, they won't. All it will do is move even more business online, which is the last thing shops need.MattMattMattUK said:
A bit pointless when people can just order anything they want online though.JamoLew said:Wasn't the point to not hand an unfair trading advantage to the supermarkets when compared to "independent" traders who have been directed to close.
It appears to be where that line is drawn that is the debatable point
Today's incident - smashed mug - I could wait a week or two - but I will be trying to take one off the shelf to buy next time I'm in Tesco (even if I have to break through cellophane to do so).
So - no people aren't going to wait....0 -
Bit of a faff rubbing two sticks together every time you want to light a candle though.Grumpy_chap said:I always keep a pile of sticks for emergency, so if the need arises I can rub two together for instant heat, light, and cooking. Even lightbulbs are not essential given my stock of candles.1 -
But very money saving 😉Jeremy535897 said:

There's the trade off: do you save money by rubbing two sticks together every time you light a candle, or do you light one candle off another even if you don't really need it yet?Grumpy_chap said:

I mean is a functioning WC essential? People used to have chamber pots. Maybe Drakeford should say that and ban any plumbing work?1

And very good for making compost.Dr_Crypto said:I mean is a functioning WC essential? People used to have chamber pots. Maybe Drakeford should say that and ban any plumbing work?
I think the way this thread is developing goes some way to proving my earlier comments:Grumpy_chap said:

No wonder OP's daughter wants to leave Wales, if staying there means having to survive by rubbing two sticks together and using chamber pots!I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards.
