Ive decided to plant a garlic bulb today to see what happens - any hints or advice?? Do I peel its 'skin' off? How much watering does the bulb need? Should I plant in a small container (about 5ins width) or the big one (about 15inches width)?? Questions, questions, I dont know.
You don't plant the whole bulb - you break it apart and plant the bits... I usually take the papery skin off but leave the red stuff 'cos it's supposed to be there.

Dampen and then tamp your compost lightly and then push the garlic in so that only the tiniest bit shows above the surface.

    Then water and wait... :)

DH and DS have gone fishing so I have walked the dog up to mums. Gave dad his card and prezzie. Went to tesco with mum. Got 3 bags of pies from the instore bakery at half price for the freezer as everyone was buying salad and beer. Also got 3 loaves of longlife bread at half price. They are still guaranteed for a week.

Grass and hedge needs cutting but it is still too hot!

    Hi all,

We had an intersting OS Sunday today. First thing we went to DS's Dad's house to drop off Father's Day card and Pressie. He wasn't in so we posted the card and hid the pressie. Had a call from him to say he had found it though so OK.
Then off to my Mum & dad to deliver Father's Day card and pressie. Cards were bought about 2 months ago from a local card shop that was closing down, so 3 cards for £1. Stocked up on what thay had left. My Dad (aged 74) just loves kids' sweets so he got a 1Kg tub of Haribo-style sweets from Lidl. He was chuffed to bits and started munching straight away.

Then we went to one of these very English open-air proms concerts. It was called Proms on the Pitch and was at a high school in Skelmersdale. I work for the company organising it so got my £20 family ticket for free. We took along our picnic and chairs and were just settling down to enjoy the music when the thunderstorm hit! Kids sheltered under our groundsheet whilst me and OH cuddled under brolly. A lovely lady came round giving out bin bags so then the four of us looked a picture wearing our black bags. Kids loved it and had great fun. We've just about dried out but what a great day! One to remember... :D

Hi Rage - Glad to hear that your headache is lifting! I know how you feel, although not to the extremes you have had, I just feel awful when it is too hot, the humidity really gets me, so I had to have a sleep this afternoon - but finally, theres quite a strong breeze coming in now, hopefully, ill get the thunderstorms too, I always feel much better after one!

Thanks Squeaky for the garlic bulb advice, Ive just planted a couple and feeling quite excited to see what happens next - I already have some Lemon tree's growing, they are about 4inches high now, the one I gave to little sis is apparently thriving too, and everytime I go 'look, look!!!' to the boyf, he looks at me bemusedly as if im mad - but hey, he wont be complaining when I get a full on veg patch going!

Ive been thinking about chickens this afternoon too, after reading one of the other threads. I have a question though - are they noisy?? I wouldnt want the neighbours to get too upset, but I would really love to have fresh eggs every day, and im sure kitty could do with some playmates!! I love pets - I wish I could just go and retire to a farm somewhere and just be self-sufficient on what I could produce myself..... Hopefully the boyf will become a rich musician - he can go on tour and I could live in the country - heaven!!

Im getting off track now - I think ill go make some dinner.... Not entirely sure what yet though!!

    Jo xx

    congrats to your daughter Catznine!

Today I went to the Oldstyle organic market and I bought:

    6 tomatoes
    a big bunch of spinach
    carrots
    (organic) butter
    big loaf of bread

and now I cant stop eating toast! I am going to be so fat by monday! :D

Then I went to old style allotments and attempted to chip at cement like soil - before giving up - runner beans, pumpkin, sweetcorn, peppers and garlic are still battling on though!

Came home and had a massive old style clear out - gotta move house end of july and am planning to go with just two suitcases - I like to keep things simple!

I am hoping for a BIG thunderstorm in london - need to clear the air, wash away some of the pollution haze the sun builds up

    Have a good evenings everyone!
I've made my debts bite-size too depressing to look at all at once so am handling them one at a time - first up Graduate Loan £1720 paid off! only £280 to go!!!
