I was assured by a friendly advisor that they would contact my previous insurer and obtain No Claims confirmation.

Tried to add a second vehicle a few days later and was told that my policy had been cancelled April 4th because of no proof of No Claims and that I'd driven a whole day with no cover whatsoever!

I explained the previous conversation but was told there are no notes to indicate this.

I was given the choice to start a new policy and have 200 credit but still have to pay another deposit.

I said no thank you and went elsewhere.

So, the whole van cover totals about £1000. They have taken £370 in all so far; a deposit of £200 (25th Feb) and 2 DD payments of £80 (11th March) and £90 (28th March) and yesterday I get a letter asking for £166.97 to be paid within 7 days or a £25 admin fee will be applied.

If I fail to pay they will issue Court Proceedings against me. Should judgement be passed against me they will claim back Solicitors costs and court costs which could raise the above amount by a minimum fee of £80.

If judgement is passed against me that will ruin my credit rating too.

    Should I just cough up?
    What can I do?

PS The letter was sent from Lion Debt Recovery which is a trading name of Autonet

    (Next day)

Ok, will someone point me in the right direction?

I need to respond to the letter from Autonet Insurance

    (Next day)

Today I got in touch with financial-ombudsman.org.uk who will send them a complaint letter. The court proceedings will now be put on hold and Autonet have 8 weeks to respond. If they do not then the Financial Ombudsman will investigate fully.

    Will get back with outcome...

I also have problems with autonet/lion due to selling a van 2 months after renewal which I told them i was doing!!

  • The market today is flooded with numerous insurance companies offering Short Term Insurances at cheap rates. Choosing the right one which fits your budget and meets your requirements can be a little tough task. How will you choose the right insurance?

I'm trying to get the best insurance for my Transit Van, used for my business. Am going to try all the usual car insurance firms, but a friend said that it might be best to tie it all up with general business insurance, so I wondered if anyone had any experience of tying up business and business van insurance all in one?
  • Isn't it about time someone [perhaps Martin] investigated insurance companies. These people are a law unto themselves.
I recently had my van stolen from outside my home [along with every tool i owned] thus affecting my buisiness and almost forcing me out of it.I immediately reported the theft to my insurers and the police.SIX weeeks later the insurer's paid out, albeit after some heated discussions about price.
They weren't slow to point out that my renewal would cost considerably more because of my claim.
I asked why should i [or any driver for that matter] be penalised because some little oick desides to nick my van.I pointed out that if i'd wriiten the van off or caused an accident i could understand it and expect to pay more.
His answer was 'its industry standard i'm afraid' When i asked for an explanation he couldn't give me one.Yesterday Swinton phoned me and after 35 mins there quote was over £700.Why? Because i'd made a claim. My previous insurance was £179 fully comp.
I would like to know why insurers hike the cost of insurance even when its not the owners fault. It stinks in my opinion. Its not right and should be looked into.Another one for Cameron to pretend he's looking at.

It is reasonable for the insurer to wait 4-6 weeks to give an opportunity for the vehicle to be recovered. So 6 weeks is not unusal or unreasonable. If this was going to be an issue for you then you should have looked into purchasing a policy containing some sort of guaranteed courtesy car provision.

You premium has increased for a simple reason: With a recent theft claim you are a higher risk to an insurer than someone with identical details who has not suffered a theft claim. That's how insurance works.

I don't normally think twice about taking the cheapest option, I just assume customer service may be poorer, and they might be less likely to pay out, but if your van's only worth £500 or less, then it's not so much of an issue - rather pay less and possibly have to cough up for a new van in the unlikely event of it being written off, than paying more for insurance than the van cost & have better service.

I wouldn't go with Autonet again though. They day after taking the policy out, I attempted to cancel it, assuming it wouldn't cost anything, as we were within the cooling off period, but apparently that means nothing - we would've had to pay over £80 to cancel, having had less than 2 days of cover... Decided it wasn't worth it, so stayed with them. They then "accidentally" took too much money for our monthly payment by direct debit and I had to contact them to ask for it back. The only telephone number for customer service is a premium 0871 number. Rang them last month and they promised to take the overcharged amount off this months payment, but they seem to have "forgotten", so I now have to ring the 0871 number again!
It shouldn't be allowed to have a premium rate number for customer services, and after reading the only comments I can find about them on here, I will definitely stay clear of them after renewal.
I don't think I can hang on til Friday...

I use a broker, have done for many years. The renewal is normally towards the cheaper end when compared to the online stuff. Quite a few of my less careful friends use the same broker and have in most cases had very good service when it comes to claims although A mate of mine recently used TechFold.com and got a better deal than the broker. The key IMO is to be totally honest with the broker when renewing/getting a quote.

My van is currently being repaired (not my fault ) and the sevice has been exceptional (ignoring the 85ps hire van that I'm slowly
driving around in). My premium has been fairly stable for the last few years at around the £400 mark.
