  • Does anyone know any comparison sites or companies for a 6.5t HGV van that needs insuring in Northern Ireland?

Your response to their offer is, quite frankly, ridiculous.
    I couldn't agree more.
be careful of this one. 3 years ago i insured a van for the first time with no probs. when my renewal came up i decided to hunt around and on the internet i found a good deal and procceded, giving the information that had been stated on my renewal offer of 3 years ncd [although i had only had insurance for 1 year]. i paid for my new insurance and was sent a cover note along with a request for proof of ncd, i phoned my old insurers and asked them to forward details, the informed me that i only had 1 years ncd and that the other 2 years were discresionary? meaning the price they had quoted for my renewal was an introductory offer ?? i argued that they had put in print that i had 3 years ncd and that they should stand by that, they admitted that is was misleading, i replied ithought it was a bloody scam ! on informing my new insurers of this my insurance jumped by just under £100 ! and they agreed that it was sharp practice and they dont use those types of tactics......guess what, my insurance renewal has just come through quoting 5 years ncd, i phoned this 'honest' company and asked them if i could take my 5 years ncd elswhere, their reply was 'no, this is an introductory offer', really i asked, could you tell me exactly where in the small print this is stated ? 'erm..i'll get my manager to phone you' that was 3 days ago...no return call. im sure this is against the law under misleading or misrepresentation and am going to ask the ombudsman on his opinions. watch this space.
It's not rocket science. By your own admission you'd only had your insurance for one years. How would you expect to have earned more than one years no claims discount in that time? You've taken advantage of the fact that you've been paying less than you "should have" for the last two (?) years, because your broker negotiated a discount that you otherwise wouldn't have been entitled to. That's how brokers work. But by all means speak to the ombudsman. I'm sure they want to hear all about your inability to count.
  • This probably sounds obvious, but what is the screenscraper, and howz it work ? I am confused as at the bottom of the page it reads,
    Direct saving £245
    Broker saving £285
    Screenscraper £ 345
Whats the method ? for Martins screenscraper ?
  • How does it work ?
It would appear there is a different proccess from Direct quote, and broker quote , to Martins screenscraper !
    Whats the method ?
  • My van insurance is due to expire in a couple of weeks. I'm an electrician.

    Last year: £457

This year broker says: £1497 with same insurer (NIG), or £772 with Zurich.

Did a several screen scrapes on this site and followed all the advice etc. Prices varied from £1200 to £6000.

No accidents, claims, convictions. Living in B66 postcode. In fact, no changes in circumstances (ok maybe I'm a year older, now 41).

    Any ideas wots going on???
    :mad::eek::mad::(:mad:
    Me too neither.

    Hi Groggi,
Click on this site's "Insurance" tab.
Then click on the "Motor" tab.
On the "Motor" tab itself, click on "Cheap Van Insurance"
Look for the big red boxes about halfway down the page.
    Click the "Try It" link.

You'll be given a form to fill in and submit.

Some moments after submitting you'll be given a list of resulting quotes (these are the screenscrape results).

Tip1: don't forget to tick or untick the marketing/privacy boxes accordingly, depending on whether you want to receive follow-up phone calls and letters.

Tip2: Don't be disappointed if your quotes are ludicrously high - as were mine.
  • Many thanks, seems simple now, In my defence it was late, and had been on screen for too long !!

Lol, I think many will know that late night weary state of mind when you become a 'click-zombie'.

    As for my insurance:

Sadly I couldn't get a good deal using the screen scrapers. Cheapest quote was around £1200 (last year I paid £457). I have a completely clean insurance history and clean licence - that gives you an idea of how awful the insurance market is today.

When I did the screen scrapers I clicked all the privacy buttons but still got some junk mail, so I phoned one of the companies up. I haggled them down to less than £740 with tools cover thrown in. Now i've gone back to my original insurance broker who will match or improve on that price without compromising the cover. That's as good as it'll get for me.

I was assured by a friendly advisor that they would contact my previous insurer and obtain No Claims confirmation.

Tried to add a second vehicle a few days later and was told that my policy had been cancelled April 4th because of no proof of No Claims and that I'd driven a whole day with no cover whatsoever!

I explained the previous conversation but was told there are no notes to indicate this.

I was given the choice to start a new policy and have 200 credit but still have to pay another deposit.

I said no thank you and went elsewhere.

So, the whole van cover totals about £1000. They have taken £370 in all so far; a deposit of £200 (25th Feb) and 2 DD payments of £80 (11th March) and £90 (28th March) and yesterday I get a letter asking for £166.97 to be paid within 7 days or a £25 admin fee will be applied.

If I fail to pay they will issue Court Proceedings against me. Should judgement be passed against me they will claim back Solicitors costs and court costs which could raise the above amount by a minimum fee of £80.

If judgement is passed against me that will ruin my credit rating too.

    Should I just cough up?
    What can I do?

PS The letter was sent from Lion Debt Recovery which is a trading name of Autonet

    (Next day)

Ok, will someone point me in the right direction?

I need to respond to the letter from Autonet Insurance

    (Next day)

Today I got in touch with financial-ombudsman.org.uk who will send them a complaint letter. The court proceedings will now be put on hold and Autonet have 8 weeks to respond. If they do not then the Financial Ombudsman will investigate fully.

    Will get back with outcome...
