in this current climate, why on earth would anyone book a holiday abroad at all? Just stay in this country for a break.
Funnily enough my Crystal Ball didn't flag this up when I booked my holiday last October....

Why not  :):):) ,this is the problem ,the virus has been on the go in the UK for about 5 or 6 months but prior to this life went on as normal which includes booking next years holiday!
I will probably get shot down in flames for admitting it but my wife and myself are of to the Canary Isles next week,no great problem as we are retired and ANOTHER two weeks at home is nothing new.

Can you check in for flights that far in advance?
Yes, I can check in for my Ryanair flights 30 days in advance.

OK, I normally fly BA and it is 24 or 48 hours in advance.
I personally consider advance check in to be absurd and really a misnomer.  Surely, the very definition of "check-in" is that you are checking in to report that you are at the airport and making way through the system to be ready to fly and they should expect you to board the flight.  If you "check-in" days or weeks ahead, that is nonsense.  Anything could happen.

Whilst what you say about check-in was true for air travel in the 1950s-90s, technology has changed that.  Effectively, all check in is now is entering your ID details,  getting a seat allocated, and getting a barcode to allow you to pass security on the day you travel.  Through the systems the airports and airlines have, they know if you've dropped bags off, they know if you've been through airport security.  No flight is sat around waiting for a passenger that checked in 28 days ago who's nowhere near the airport.

All I can say is "if it could go wrong, it probably would go wrong".

My sympathy has gotten a bit thin for the 'must have a holiday' mob, but it must be a nasty shock to suddenly be told that you now have to quarantine on your return. My concern is whether people will actually quarantine as in 'self isolate'?

It would surely have been better not to relax restrictions at all, rather than relax them too soon, and I'm referring to other countries as well as the UK.
My understanding is they contact one in five people by phone. I mean, anyone can pretend to be at home when they ring. An utter shambles of a system which is good for nothing.
Why would anyone pretend to comply and not actually do it? Would you want to be the one that infects work colleagues who then go on to infect their elderly relatives? Would you want to be responsible for someone's death/ long term illness?
For the same reason they ignore the most basic of social distancing rules, refuse to wear masks, want to travel etc etc.  The world revolves around them. I comes first..........  Basically selfish.

Or, they have a boss that says if they dont come in they will be sacked. Life isnt always as simple as you make it out to be.

I guarantee that at some point in the next 2 weeks we get a thread in here from a newbie in exactly that situation.

No just him. But again i havent heard any case of it actually being enforced.
It’s unlikely someone will knock on the door, but if you’ve specifically been told
to isolate then it’s selfish not to isn’t it?
Suppose it depends if people can afford 2 weeks off work unpaid or not. A lot of people currently abroad are now going to be plunged into this dilemma and I wouldnt blame them for one second if they ignored it.
Screw them, they knew the risks and as an employee i wouldn't be happy them returning to work straight away.

Not all employers will have the same opinion. Trust me, it will happen, and there will be a thread from a newbie on here flapping about it.

As for saying "screw them", well thats a a bit harsh. Lots of people will have had no choice but to go on holiday in the last few weeks because they couldnt afford to take the financial hit, holidays can be booked well over a year in advance you know.

I was going to say a responsible employer wouldn't want you to come to work if there is a very real risk that you could spread the virus, but even a selfish employer would think twice about the effects of the virus spreading amongst the workforce.
