Phew, i was thinking for a minute there that people on a money saving website were saying it was absolutely fine for people to spend thousands on a holiday and then have no holiday at the end of it.
Oh, hang on, someone actually did say that....4 -
I didn't say it was fine - what I said (or meant to) was that to suggest that people face financial hardship because of it is not true5

The government's incompetent handling of the pandemic has been disastrous so far, leading to tens of thousands of unnecessary excess deaths. Although still a little shambolic, it appears they are finally trying to get onto the front foot and be proactive, with the new measures on face coverings, keeping nightclubs closed, and now removing Spain from the safe countries as it shows signs of a potential surge in coronavirus cases. It is unfortunate for those whose holiday plans are affected and I have every sympathy for them, however I think this is the right decision to help protect our nation's health and wider economy.
When the quarantine requirements were lifted, it was made clear that, should it be necessary, they could be reimposed at any time. It is particularly unfortunate for those who booked some time ago, didn't have the option to cancel and are now in a difficult position of needing to self-isolate, however those who have booked in the last few weeks did so knowing the world is still in the middle of a pandemic and this could happen.2 -

I love the way people on this website can always come up with new Money Saving ideas - I guess that's why we call them Expertsbradders1983 said:Thats like saying you just paid Ford £20k for a new car, you arent getting the car but its alright as you just arent getting the end product and hey, at least you dont have to insure and tax it now.

I never used the word "hardship". I used the word "hit", which it still is if you have absolutely nothing to show for thousands of pounds spent no matter what the product or service isJamoLew said:I didn't say it was fine - what I said (or meant to) was that to suggest that people face financial hardship because of it is not true0 -

Paying money to go on holiday is not, by definition "money saving" Choosing not to go does not incur extra costs either.
But, paying for something you don't get is always a !!!!!! result at any time.0 -

Viz Top Tip: save yourself spending money on a holiday by simply not going on the £10k trip of a lifetime you have already paid out for.Grumpy_chap said:

We should put together a whole suite of these types of ideas and get them in a useful reference guide somewhere on the site. Here's another one:bradders1983 said:

Save money on electricity by not plugging in your 4K HD TV!
So MoneySavingExpert, I'm feeling EPIC! (Ooops - that's another website)

It pains me greatly that those who have booked over the last week with TUI are being offered a whole host of flexible options if their holidays are affected.tripled said:It is particularly unfortunate for those who booked some time ago, didn't have the option to cancel and are now in a difficult position of needing to self-isolate, however those who have booked in the last few weeks did so knowing the world is still in the middle of a pandemic and this could happen.
I booked in January for October half term. My balance was due today which I haven’t paid (I had agreed a 2 week extension with them as I hadn’t heard what was happening with my booking.
My hotel has cut pretty much all the services for kids and other bits and pieces yet TUI still want the full amount of money. So I understand Bradders sentiments about taking the hit because I either walk away having lost £800 deposit or paying the balance of an extra £1500 and going and “having to make the most of it”. If I wasn’t travelling with kids that wouldn’t be so difficult but in Andalucia you have to wear masks all the time even on the beach and by the pool and for them it’s a big ask.1 -

I do not think you can blame the government for everything ,every country in the world has been hit with this pandemic ,even the countries that shut down straight away have had loads of deaths ,its tragic but these things happen ,thank god not very often.tripled said:The government's incompetent handling of the pandemic has been disastrous so far, leading to tens of thousands of unnecessary excess deaths. The other thing is whatever they do they are called incompetent if they do something quickly or if they wait and see.4
