we've had someone come on in the last 24 hours telling us not to use the word as a chastisement.
Which particular word are you referring to? Because, without explaining that, your post is gibberish.

Oh Dear: Should have read Guy's ?   :D

"It's less common to use 'guys' to refer to females unless you are referring to a group of males and females together. In that case 'guys' is an informal substitute for 'people'."

"If you're talking to people directly 'guys' is acceptable, e.g. 'Hi guys!' even if some (or all) are female. In this context it means 'friends' or 'acquaintances'."

It may have done once, but it's probably offending someone nowadays

I wouldn't expect to have to explain it to 99% of people, even if the sentence you part-quoted hadn't contained the word feminist.
I notice you took the trouble to edit that bit out though; did you do that because it's the part of the sentence that removes all doubt about the word to which I was referring?

Everything offends someone these days?  :'(:D

But am seemingly old school. So agree with guys. Sorry to all the Wokies? Is that what you call them? Ah! Star Wars great films.

If I walked into a pub "remember them"

I would not say Hi. Men/Women/Boys/Girls/LGBTs/BAMEs and Hi to any all others names that are in todays only current PC list?
I would unfortunately say Hi Guys to cover all. As said older generation. Or I would be there all day going through todays PC list.  :s

But agree probably not advisable in these times.

So perhaps Hi : Humans, People, Persons, Earthlings, Citizens, Folks, Mortals, Etc

Or the pubs, I frequent probably Hi: Riffraffs, Plebeians etc

Sorry: Thinking about I would want a quick drink when the pubs opened and would say. Hi everyone ?
To cut down time in pleasantries?  Unless that offends anyone? Yes, probably does?

Nothing to do with Neon Reef?  Who brought this up? I blame them.  >:)  Apologise.  o:)

    And I do.
Actually, folks is quite a good all-encompassing word to use. As long as you are not misheard, of course....
