For anyone who wants to try their luck, the British Gas Zero Fixed Oct 22 electricity tariff would be unbeatable IF you can switch to it.  You can even pay with Variable Direct Debit which eliminates all the problems associated with excess credit building up and the confusion about 'All You Can Eat'.
I managed to escape Symbio's SoLR and I've been told in Chats and emails that my tariff (currently the SVT) will be backdated to the start of service.  Chat seems to be the only way to get it and you'll have to be very persistent and keep the transcript (take photos because transcripts don't always materialise), but if you like a challenge it might be worth a go.
I had good luck with my first Live Chat. I printed the transcript to PDF and the advisor assured me I'd be able to transfer to that tariff after first signing up to the SVT.

Did you choose to join the standard British Gas brand or British Gas Evolve?

EDIT: Seems like I can't join the SVT directly but I can go for an Evolve zero-exit-fee fixed tariff. Is that what you did?

I would be very surprised if you can move to a BG tariff when it sounds like you joined / are joining BG Evolve - from what ive read they use completely different back end software so the BG tariff is probably does not even exist on BG evolves system
Haven't signed up for anything yet. If I go via the BG brand the only tariff available is one with a £75 exit fee. Might still be worth it lol. I need to get back on the Live Chat and see what the options are. Would have been ideal if I was able to nip the issue in the bud with the original advisor.
It's basically Zero Fixed Oct 22 or bust.  If you're fobbed off with BG Evolve or any other tariff it's like to be more expensive than ending up on the SoLR's SVT, so think carefully and do the sums.  You'll have to be very persistent, but the prize makes it worthwhile.
What I meant was they told me to sign up to the SVT, and then once I'm on supply I need to tell them to transfer me to Zero Fixed Oct 22. But there is no option to sign up to SVT directly.
Just done that, I took a screenshot of the chat and got an emailed transcript just to be safe.
Just done what, exactly? Were you told to do the same as me, or do something else?
Was told to switch to the only tariff that comes up on the website, contact them once the switch had gone through and they'd move me to the Zero Fixed Oct 22 tariff, backdated to the inception date.
Gotcha. Did they say anything about paying the £75 exit fee for that initial tariff?

No, but if they backdate the tariff to inception I don't see how they could charge an exit fee, as the number of days you'd be on that tariff is zero. Can't see that they'd try and get away with charging you for leaving a tariff you were never on.

https://www.britishgas.co.uk/help-and-support/my-account/understanding-energy-tariffs it’s quick and easy to change tariffs online if you’re already with us. Simply access your account online, go to ‘tariff switch’ and pick your new tariff. It’ll take us 24 hours to switch you over and you won’t have to pay any exit fees.

  • What a complete mess the current market & system is?!

We're all electric, South West, approx. annual bill:
    Dec 2019 1 year fix SoEnergy £1600
    Dec 2020 1 year fix Green, £1600
    Sept 2021 1 year fix NeonReef £1900
SOLR going forward will be £2200, with a likely big increase next April if unable to find another provider to switch to, which seems unlikely at the moment.

We're owed approx. £300 from Green & will be owed around £250 from NR now, won't see either of those for about 6 months I'm guessing.

Just cancelled the switch to Bristol Energy, so hopefully the transition from Neon Reef to British gas should go smoothly.

Elucidate the one thing that I have noticed is that there are two versions of the Zero Fixed Oct 22 tariff, one with and one without DD, and the non-DD version is over 21p per kWh.

Obviously you cannot sign-up for a DD tariff on the British Gas website as they channel you towards British Gas evolve, but once you have an account number you can sign-up for a DD here https://www.britishgas.co.uk/help-and-support/bills-and-payments/setting-up-a-direct-debit so I'll do that as soon as I can, just in case they decide to play silly buggers and say I have to pay the non-DD tariff. If I have a DD in place before they switch me, and before I ask for the tariff to be changed, I don't see how they could claim they can only move me to the non-DD version.
If you select Direct Debit on the BG sign-up page, you are correct, they do re-direct you to BG Evolve. However, on the BG Evolve page there's an option where you can tell them you'd rather stick to the BG brand. That then takes you back to the BG website where they offer a single tariff on a DD basis, a tariff different from the ones offered on the BG Evolve site.

Looking on a couple of comparison sites, Utility Warehouse, Ebico Living & Bristol Energy have tariffs for around £2000 per year, is it worth trying to sign up now? I've only heard of UW?

I'm not sure you need to be very persistent, they agreed straight away, you just have to ask.

I wonder whether British Gas want to tap into the persistent switchers market, knowing that some of us will go out of our way to get a cheap tariff, without having to offer the cheaper price to everyone?

That wasn't my experience but it clearly depends on the agent you chat with.
My account is still being set up even though I agreed the switch to Zero Fixed Oct 22 on 30 September, and I'm still only on the SVT.  If I try to switch via my online account it just says there's a problem.
