  • Be REALLY careful about opting to jump to "escape" the SoLR process if you currently have credit - and are going to need that credit to pay bills this winter. You're unlikely to be seeing it back any time soon as you may be at the end of the process with the new SoLR. You *might* be lucky, but it's not a gamble I'd be taking if I knew I was going to be replying on credit currently held by NR to enable me to heat or light my home this year.

For anyone who wants to try their luck, the British Gas Zero Fixed Oct 22 electricity tariff would be unbeatable IF you can switch to it.  You can even pay with Variable Direct Debit which eliminates all the problems associated with excess credit building up and the confusion about 'All You Can Eat'.
I managed to escape Symbio's SoLR and I've been told in Chats and emails that my tariff (currently the SVT) will be backdated to the start of service.  Chat seems to be the only way to get it and you'll have to be very persistent and keep the transcript (take photos because transcripts don't always materialise), but if you like a challenge it might be worth a go.

So annoyingly the next cheapest is Bristol Energy, their online system is not working at the moment so for the first time in my life I've switched over the phone. For those who want to escape the SOLR and not be stuck for six weeks tomorrow is probably the last day so I wouldn't wait around.
Just took a look at their tariffs and there was nothing cheaper than their standard capped variable rate, which is the same as you would be on with the SoLR, so not sure what the benefit of switching would be?
I assume you were looking at the tariff details (standing charge, rate per kWh) not just at the monthly DD estimate?

So sure, if you're happy with the price cap and care about nothing else, the SOLR is fine. It's just not my cup of tea.
All understood, but just to be clear for others, this isn't another 'cheap' tariff you have found, it is just their capped standard variable rate you are moving to?

    Yes that's correct.
  • @Patr100 Someone seems to be propping Bulb up. Also Ofgem seem to set the bar very low for licence applications, if at all, if recent history is anything to go by.

At the moment, I don’t think the SoLR system is fit for purpose.

I don't disagree with that at all. I would only advise someone does this if they are in debit, have a trivial credit balance, or can afford not to see the credit balance money for at least six months.
  • One bit of "good" news - the missing DD taken on the 5th November ,is now showing on the "Bills and Payments" page !!

Snap!  My missing payment from 9th November now showing in Bills & Payments, however, the Statement .pdf file has not been updated. A myriad of screenshots should provide proof if/when needed.

As the DD payment is now showing online, it should be included in your next NR bill, which will be their Final Bill - but I'll say it now, it probably won't say 'Final
Bill' as the old UP software, which NR uses in a re-branded format,  never did.

You will be able to identify it as a final bill as it will not be a complete month, but rather end on the day, or day before, the SoLR starts.

Wise to take a screenshot of the credit now on your online account, though  :)

Certainly isn't fit for purpose as the cost of all these collapses will be added to consumer's energy bills.

I had good luck with my first Live Chat. I printed the transcript to PDF and the advisor assured me I'd be able to transfer to that tariff after first signing up to the SVT.

Did you choose to join the standard British Gas brand or British Gas Evolve?

EDIT: Seems like I can't join the SVT directly but I can go for an Evolve zero-exit-fee fixed tariff. Is that what you did?

I don't think there should be an SOLR process at all, but then suppliers should not be required to advertise based on the average customer's monthly DD rather than the standing charge & kWh price. Imagine if you went past a petrol station and rather than telling you the price per litre, the price board said "The average motorist will spend £xx per month on petrol by filling up here". Little of what OfGem does makes any sense.
