Example of 2.5" SATA SSD: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Crucial-MX500-CT500MX500SSD1-NAND-Internal/dp/B0784SLQM6/ref=sr_1_3
You can obtain cheaper parts, I have just listed relatively high quality components to give you an idea of costs.0 -

It's a quality component, but if there is no space inside the case they may have to remove the old HDD.
M.2 2280 meant that they would not have to touch the old HDD and could experiment to see if it was still working to any extent.
There are only two standard SATA 3.0 slots and one is taken up by the DVD drive.

So, which one do I buy then?P.s did I mention that my I.T skills are absolutely rubbish lol0

If you never really use your DVD drive then you could stick with the SATA SSD and plug it in where the DVD currently goes. (Or you could unplug your HDD and plug in the SSD there).
If you want access to the DVD, your old HDD and a new SSD at the same time then the M.2 SSD may be better as it will use a connector on your motherboard that is presently free.
Some BIOS tweaks will likely be needed going forward, but that's for the next step after the hardware is fitted.1 -
Wierdly I've just updated Windows 10 on my desktop and got exactly the same issue. However, I can get mine to boot up normally by pressing the F12 key (for set up, but it doesn't go in to setup, just boots} as soon as it appears. Although I see youve already tried that. However, mine's a SSD and there's nothing obviously wrong with it so it must be some glitch in the boot up process in my case.1

If it is a BIOS issue, you might be able to get the 3TB storage drive up and running again, with the new M.2 2280 SSD as your main drive. You'll run Windows on the SSD and perhaps store movies etc on the slower 3 TB drive.
If it is a problem with the 3 TB drive, then it's useless and either solution should do the trick.
Caveat for the 2.5" SSD; If there is no extra space inside the case for it, you may have to unscrew and remove the old HDD. If there is, then it may be simply a matter of swapping the leads, taking just a few seconds.
Caveat for the M.2 2280 SSD; It seems they don't supply the necessary single screw needed. Other than that, takes a few seconds to fit once the case is open.
So now, since no one else has got around to doing it, I will take a look to see if I can find how it looks inside the PC, after dinner.
Then I can advise on which might be the easiest solution for you.
But get the installation media ready regardless.

That is your PC, but with an M.2 SSD fitted. Note how quickly it starts up.
It seems there is space for the 2.5" SSD. But you will either have to unplug the leads from the old HDD and in to the new SSD, losing the old HDD or do the same with the optical drive, losing that.
He also shows the location of where to fit the M.2 2280 SSD, which would mean that you can leave everything else intact.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HkgQ18G4jFg
Personally, I would go for an M.2 2280 SSD. This one; https://www.amazon.co.uk/Crucial-MX500-CT500MX500SSD4-2280SS-Internal/dp/B077SQ8J1V/ref=pd_sbs_147_3/262-8074188-2043453
leaving the option to fix or swap the HDD for a 2.5" SSD later.
You can also check to see if there is the necessary screw for the M.2 drive. Looks like;

Thank you for your in depth response. I think the m2 comes with the screw but not the stand, is this something I need to buy also?0
