We have bred three litters over the years. I am not a professional breeder but I think we've done a good job with our pups over the years. People say "you must make loads of money out of it" - and yes, overall we probably have made a "profit" in financial terms - but not much!
The financial and time costs involved in breeding are huge. Anyone undertaking a venture like this as a get rich quick scheme is badly misguided. The OP would have been much better off just buying a puppy from a KC breeder.
off the top of my head, some of the considerations which people might not think about when considering breeding
- vet fees for the !!!!!!
- stud fee
- time off work/sleepless nights during delivery
- emotional stress of nursing puppies (and in some cases dealing with still birth or puppy failing to thrive)
- vetting potential owners to detemine "suitability" - lots to consider here. I only advertise on KC and try to use my own judgement about their suitability, lifestyle, job etc. I avoid anyone who tries to haggle on price - buying a dog is a massive commitment and saving £50 shouldn't be your priority
- setting aside time for people to come and view the pups
- vet checks on pups, tail docking, jabs, microchips etc
- KC paperwork etc
- cleaning up the mess (week 1 - 4 usually ok, weeks 5 - 9 are a constant clean up)
We had some wonderful pups and are still in touch with most of the owners who brought them. I'm really not in a hurry to do it again though. It takes over your whole life for a few months. We had one litter of 8 from which we did make a few £££. But the next litter was only 2 pups and I doubt we even broke even!
All in all, I think I can consider myself retired from breeding!

It's a pity the OP's partner didn't ask for your advice before deciding it was a good idea to breed the dog she already had to get a 4 year old a puppy of her own.

Can I just update with some amazing news.
The Shih Tzu puppy now named Martha is walking absolutely fine with her new owners, which actually was a free gift anyway as it was pick of the litter to the owners of the stud dog, and the xrays came back fine.
The vet just put it down to late development which they apparently call swimmers, but as the weeks rolled on shes now running around without a care in the world.
And mum is booked into being spayed. So its definetly not anything I would partake in again thats for sure.

Makes no difference if they grew up in a garden shed or Buckingham Palace still a Back Street Breeder.Oh, the PDSA brought in a new ruling I believe it was last year as there was a thread on this forum. You can only register one pedigree animal with them this was because so many Back Street Breeders were abusing their charity.0
