Don't be tarring all those who were brought up in council houses as scum!!6 -
Overuse and abuse of the system is why there is no PDSA treatment available in Cornwall and many other places.
Lack of funds meant that they had to reduce the services they offered.
PDSA do give support to breeding and have restrictions of what treatment is available to breeders.4 -
Let us just say it BACK STREET BREEDER! Makes no difference if they grew up in a garden shed or Buckingham Palace still a Back Street Breeder.Oh, the PDSA brought in a new ruling I believe it was last year as there was a thread on this forum. You can only register one pedigree animal with them this was because so many Back Street Breeders were abusing their charity.5

Look at it this way, if the puppy didnt have walking issues we wouldn't even be here talking about it.
My partner before she met me used to breed all the time because where she used to live had a PDSA, so any vets bills were minimal.
Personally the only pets I have ever had is cats, but cats rome about outside and get caught pregnant that way. But once my cat had her first litter, I had her spade. But I gave the kittens to other family members. I wasent interested in making money.
So ok yes I could have put my foot down and said I dont agree with this venture, but really at the time I didnt see anything wrong with it. Its only now its caused a problem that its hit me. And yes I do feel guilty for not stopping it, but its too late now to keep beating myself up or causing a rift between me and my partner is it? Shes an adult and has her own mind doesnt she? The only things shes frustrated about is Cornwall doesnt have a PDSA, I assume in laymans terms a PDSA is a bit like the NHS, only difference is its voluntary run by donations which helps to keep vet bills down.
Even she regrets this venture now due to us not having money to fund if anything serious needs doing.
But I will say the puppy seems to be walking and standing on her back legs a lot better the past 2 days. So I'm going to be brave and say I don't think anything serious is wrong. Dad reckons shes just a late developer and we were hasty booking the X-ray so soon, but we just followed the advice of the vets. But now we got to wait 10 days anyway to see results. So personally I dont see what was wrong in waiting another fortnight to see if she naturally improved anyway. But then I suppose if we did that its another 10 days on top of that for results if walking didnt improve. Its a catch 22 situation isnt it to know whats best to do. I got some agreeing with me we should have hanged on a bit longer, then others are saying we did the right thing by doing the X-ray when we did.
Either way I wont be involved in anything like this again.Well, I guess it's a step forward that you now agree you are involved.Nobody is saying you should shoulder all the responsibility. You are the one posting so you are the one who is getting all the censure first hand.I'm sure you have enough sense to realise that the censure applies to your partner too.The PDSA issue has been discussed so I won't add my voice to the other comments that I agree with.It really is brave of you to say the puppy doesn't have anything serious wrong with it.Who needs vets, eh?I just hope - for your sake and the puppy's sake - that further down the line it doesn't turn out to have some congenital disease as a result of your partner's poor breeding choices..renegadefm said:Well I'm a believer of giving everyone a chance. Her background wasent good, her parents lived in a council house, and she too took that path. But she has a heart of gold which attracted me to her about 6 years ago now. Its not always nice to judge people from words on a forum. For example even me, I have been honest, although a lot of people don't agree with me, I havent lied to you guys. I could have so easily just said I'm a professional breeder etc, but asked for advice based on that, because we are all constantly learning, so no one is above themselves, I get that.Have you nay idea how arrogant and condescending the bit in bold sounds? Finally, you have started enough posts on here to know that usually there is a difference of opinion on whatever subject is discussed. It is incredibly rare that there is unanimous opinion - as there is here. That should tell you something.3 -
I'm worried now. Both my mother and my partner were brought up in council houses. What if my children "take that path"?4

I suggest a genetic test just to be safe. They might turn out to be geniuses! That is not allowed if you are from a council house.

What path are you talking about?? My parents lived in a council house. My sister lives in a council house as does my brother. By your logic they should both have had a poor upbringing and be conducting shady deals while standing on street corners. You're unbelievable.2 -
Just wow.... this entire thread is just shocking. I truly truly hope your puppy is somehow just a slow developer and doesn't have anything seriously wrong with it. Even if that is the case, £200 for an xray is the least the puppy deserves to make sure he/she is okay. BTW the estimate for xrays is given as an estimate as it depends how much anaesthetic is needed that's why they don't quote the exact figure. An MRI for a human costs about £200 (no anaesthetic) so be realistic.
I don't know if you know this but a human c-section would cost about £10000 if you had to pay so £800 is nothing. But sounds like you cba to pay any vet bills regardless. Please don't buy any more pets in future. The PDSA aren't there for those who can't be bothered to pay, they're there for people who love their pets and may have fallen on hard times.
And please make sure you do the right thing by this puppy even if that's putting it to sleep. And yes there is a cost for that.3 -
Also please get your current dog spayed so there's no chance of anything like this reoccurring..4

You would not have gotten away with trying to claim you are a professional breeder as you clearly don't have the first idea about breeding animals.
You claim that this was a mistaken venture yet then you say you have previously bred cats and your partner has previously bred dogs. So it clearly wasn't a mistaken venture, you knew full well what you were getting into and had planned to make money out of your poor dog. I would say that hopefully this will be a lesson learned but I can see that will fall on deaf ears.
How long before the next litter?7
