So on the basis of an experience with one shoddy garage, you now think all of them are the same?

My dad used to have black oil after a main dealer service, the same colour as he took it in with. He used to phone up and say they hadn't serviced it. They would never admit it. They used to say "we have changed the oil sir, but for your complete 100% satisfaction if you would like to bring it back we will repeat the oil change for free". When it came back the second time it would have clean oil. The worst penalty for the garage for not changing the oil is - changing the oil. What percentage of customers check their oil after a service?
Oil in particularly a diesel car and an old one at that, will go black with a few miles driving.  Its a very common effect - purely because of the residue of the old oil around the engine - therefore to the hard of thinking it may look like the oil wasnt changed.

The effect is discussed on Honest John here...

    https://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=76781

One guy even commented "My diesel oil is black by the time I've run the engine for half a minute to let it circulate. I know its new oil as I've put it in there myself."

Oil would have been cheap back then, so changing it again (effectively flushing the engine out with the first oil change) would give you a better coloured oil second time around, and got a moaning belligerent customer off the phone.

Nowadays he'd just have been shown the video of the oil change being done and told to !!!!!! in the nicest possible way.

It was a very smart main dealers. Very smart showroom with lots of shiny plastic and glass and people inside wandering around wearing suits. Trading standards used to do most of the work exposing garage's poor standards until austerity reduced their activities. I used to drive round with a piece of paper which stated that 70% of garages were incapable of servicing a car properly. In case my breakdown cover said that my car broke down because it didn't have a garage service history. It never broke down though so I never used it.

Which helps prove my point.  They did do it, but the hard of thinking dont realise oil will go black very quickly in a diesel car.

Easiest for them just to stick another gallon of oil through to keep him happy.

My dad only had petrol engines. The printout was a review of garage servicing standards done by trading standards. Few years ago now but little has changed. I think the motor industry agreed to start the motoring ombudsman which is a complete joke.

I did once, it was easy, the garage had not tightened up the sump plug and it fell out as I was reversing onto my drive.  The oil was there for all to see.  It was clear!

I hadn't even realised that. I knew the motor ombudsman was a complete joke. They are in the same office as the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders! What a complete farce of an organisation!
