If you go onto a comparison site you can select Scottish Power -> Basic Energy v2 as your current supply and then see the rates in the quote.
In my case its a whopping 23% more expensive than my Tonik Green superpower tariff. In the current market its 15% higher than the cheapest fix tariff I can sign up to right now and 9% higher than the cheapest big 6 fix.
    No thank you....
Once I get my SP switch confirmed you can be guaranteed I'll be swapping away ASAP and almost certainly giving my new supplier the same opening reads as I gave SP, if they can take the !!!!!! so can I.

To those comparing DD amounts and thinking its all hunky dory, that is the oldest supplier trick in the book. DD's mean nothing unless they cover what you are actually being charged.
I agree Bark. However some comparison sites do not have the Basic Energy v2 Online on yet so makes it difficult to compare. I knew there was something up when SP set my DD as 1p more than I was paying Tonik yet the rates are much higher. Have been looking and like the look of either Octopus or Green, Am ready to switch on 5 November

I have the unenviable issue of living on the border of energy supplies, which means I can't view Scottish Power rate online, this has always been an issue with large providers & I rang SP up and they gave me a figure but it's not guaranteed due to this issue, & told me to await the welcome email by 5 November.  Having done a general switch search anyway, SP comes no where near the top.  My DD was also bizarrely increased by a penny.  Also hope my credit balance will be showing correctly by 5 Nov too - would ideally love a smooth switchover when I move to a new provider!!
  • Email from SP today. It mentions not to cancel the Tonik DD which I done already. Last payment was on 7th Oct. They can dip into my credit instead, even if they carry out their threat to switch me to Std Variable rate for cancelling the DD.
Mr Straw described whiplash as "not so much an injury, more a profitable invention of the human imagination—undiagnosable except by third-rate doctors in the pay of the claims management companies or personal injury lawyers"

  • Yes, I got SP email too, and called my bank to get the direct debit reinstated, which was incredibly quick to do, although I am expecting payment to come out of my large credit too rather than via DD - despite Ofgem FAQs advising - You don't need to worry if you’ve already cancelled your direct debit.

I suspect the DD cancelling memo (i got the same) is more to do with making it easy for SP to recover any debt. The 99% of Tonik customers who are in credit should be fine.

In any case as you said OFGEM are on our side, any wiff of an issue I'll be straight into the complaints procedure.

I doubt there is any hint of foul play from SP its just were being offered a terrible tariff.
I've seen no threat of moving to a SV tariff as a result of cancelling the DD, but its best practice in the industry to give a few weeks grace with missed DD's as it could be the banks fault.
  • I set up a new DD with SP and have already cancelled the Tonik DD which was with a different bank. Was at least a couple of hundreds in credit with Tonik but remember on another occasion (with BT) a refund of outstanding funds still arrived despite having cancelled the DD so hope that will happen again! Of all the energy suppliers I have been with for the last 10 years or more Tonik had been the best till this year. And SP had started out ok but them went downhill when I was last with them. And Coop energy I went to after SP was crap as well! So switching has never really lived up to the positive press its given! For me anyway!

Yes Bark you are right. I messaged SP as I have cancelled the DD. They said not to worry as keeping DD open was to make it easier to collect debt and pay back credit. They have set up new DD with my bank with first payment out on 26 November - I said thats OK as I wont be with them by then. I have looked at other tariffs (Green.energy and British Gas Evolve (only available via a small number of comparison sites at the moment)). Green said I could start the switching process now but will ring them tody to check

Just be aware that the readings you give in any switch are submitted to a 3rd party to review and if they appear to show zero usage for a couple of weeks they will be adjusted, so this can backfire on you as the adjustment may end up with you paying SP more than you needed to pay...

Has anyone had any issues inputting their Tonik details on the Scottish Power website?  It doesn't seem to recognise mine.
