PasturesNew said:I would like to join your cheery little corner, but feel disenfranchised as I do not feel in control of my choices.... in short, I am a lodger in the house of somebody whose adherence to any advice is nil.
I moved in 1 January, a lodger in a house where I immediately spotted I couldn't/didn't want to use the kitchen as there was literally "stuff everywhere, perpetually" and no housework's done in there, ever. It then got worse as the LL popped off to those faraway lands where it all started, then hurriedly returned home once the SHTF over there and flights started to be cancelled. From that moment on I have distanced myself entirely from the shared kitchen absolutely. No food is stored there (except half a dozen things in the freezer I am forcing myself to eat by entering the kitchen once a week for 3-4 minutes to nuke something)... once it's empty that's it.
Originally I was feeding myself by treating myself to an all you can eat breakfast, or going to a chippy, or wandering in a supermarket and getting something "to eat now" from the chiller. These activities have, as you can appreciate, stopped.
I bought myself a "secret kettle" kept in my room. I am mostly eating dry flatbreads and pot noodles. I don't have the space for stockpiling and I believe things will sort themselves out supply wise shortly, so there's no need.
I envy those who have a home of their own, where they make choices/decisions, where they can store food (fridge/freezer) as they choose and where they can cook food and wash up
So please, don't go telling me you're "bored"10 -
As a habitual self isolator, with little or no concept of time, I always try and make the weekend special!
I would usually go for a wander with a convenient pub in mind and have a nice Sunday lunch.
It’s fairly nice and I’ve made a start on the shed, so avoiding direct contact and conversation with anybody, I will walk down to the charity shop with a bag of bits.I have a nice lunch here to look forward to and my treat for the afternoon will be to start some putting up.
Seeds are doing well.Sunday is a day of rest, I hope you all have a peaceful one. I think I’m going to put my phone out of sight and not read or listen to anything more for now.10 -
@PasturesNew , If you need a bed, with you own bathroom and a share of a reasonably clean kitchen ( I don't obsess with sprays and wipes and the floor gets washed if and when I have the energy ) for a few weeks, Ive told you before, jump on a ferry or plane and you are welcome. No tv that will work in the bedroom but we have broadband and Netflix and stuff. There are very few cases here, none in the district I live and we have miles of muddy fields surrounding us
And I cook great chips12 -

In times of crisis.... always ensure you are not trapped within a vehicle from which you cannot remove yourself.5 -
I’m not really allowed to have candles but I’m burning some anti-viral essential oils. Not that I’ve had any visitors or anything but just getting into the habit of everything smelling like a potential sick room! 😂
I was wondering if I could offer up my spare bedroom to someone who might not cope as well on their own and would enjoy the company, but the only person I can think of is a bloody drinker who lives in the past!
I could not cope with that!8 -
Hello and welcome everyone - of course you can join in nannywindow, the more the merrier. Thank you all for your really useful posts - I am so grateful that we have the internet so although we may be confined to our homes we can still socialise and compare experiences.
Greenbee I am sorry to hear that you're unwell and I hope you recover very soon.
PasturesNew, your situation sounds grim and I don't know what you can do to sort things out with your LL. Is there a way of getting the council involved from a health & safety/hygiene point of view? You're paying rent to have access to a clean, working kitchen.
I managed to get myself in a bit upset on Saturday evening having read some of the news just before going to bed which meant I didn't sleep very well. I have now banned myself from reading things in the evening and last night found a Deepak Chopra meditation on youtube which helped me relax and I had a good long sleep. I'm not usually very good at meditation (OH goes to a group every week and loves it) as my thoughts are all over the place and I struggle to relax but it did seem have the desired effect so I plan to do that every night from now on.
We have started listing what food we each have in stock so that we can make sensible use of what we have. Like nannywindow, we may end up with some strange combinations but we will be fed. We are also concerned that if we are told by government to isolate, would we still be able to go to each other's houses? OH has the garden for growing veg and I have most of the stores and do all the cooking plus have the laundry facilities. If we're separated in different houses OH won't be able to get the veg to me and if he comes to stay here in order to get his laundry done and eat home cooked meals, we won't be able to grow anything. He can get from AtoB without coming into contact with anyone. Hmm, something to think about ...

A couple of weeks ago I moved all of my food which had a good expiry date on them to my top cupboards and sorted out what could do with being used up. That pile is still going strong especially as I added a whole load of cans from the coals which were on their dates so 10p each. I need some weird food now and saving all the good stuff! 😂
I usually do £40 shopping a week so I’m sticking to that and this week I’m concentrating on health related products - inventory, check shelf life, anticipation 6 months supply7 -
