I have separate IHD's for Gas (British Gas) and Electricity (NPower) both these failed to connect on the 15th May. I cannot believe both IHD's failed at the same time and think it is more a network problem from the company that operates it.
They both communicate with the electricity meter and that threw a wobbly,  which is why they stopped working at the same time.

If the IHD interrogated the gas meter directly,  it's repeated requests for data would flatten the gas meter's battery in no time.
He said he has separate IHDs for gas and leccy ??

You have me confused - my understanding is that the "smart" gas meter has to communicate with the leccy meter to send the readings "back to base" - how does that work with separate suppliers??
The same way that your laptop and your tablet can communicate with your router and access your bank account and energy account at the same time?
So you have to install a smart leccy meter before a smart gas meter ? If they are from different suppliers, presumably they have to be SMETS2 AND both enrolled in the DCC.

I know. But all HAN communication is via the electricity meter (or perhaps more accurately the communications hub part of the electricity meter). That's why they both stopped working at the same time. A gas meter can't communicate with an IHD.

My smart meter display developed this fault yesterday. Eon say it’s still a problem with no resolution.🙄
Mine stopped working on the 4th June, 3 days after it was installed. Still no joy with getting it to work. Don said wait 4 weeks and it should magically start working again (highly doubt it). Also it’s not even communicating by send my meter readings. Very disappointing :(

I have made numerous phone calls and still gotten nowhere with eon, spoke to about 8 different ppl at different times and all telling me BS,

oh it will magically start working in a week or two, just be patient.

We will send someone to put a new meter, will contact you tomorrow, nothing!

sorry, there is nothing we can do. It’s a known problem.

You will just need to send us manual readings from you smart meter as we have no idea what’s wrong or when a fix is coming.

I protested and demanded my old meter get reinstalled and was told no problem, it will cost you to have it re-install, new credit check etc, please call tomorrow as the department that deals with that are closed.

I phone the next day, sorry we are not installing meters during Covid. I said hello my smart meter was installed June 1st and stopped working 3 days after. What do you mean you not installing meters? Hold the line please...well you smart meter is actually the same as a manual meter, you just need to press the button and send us the readings manually. I said I will not, whats the point of having a broken smart meter that should be sending readings for me to then do it manually? If it was not a smart meter I would like I did before submit my meter readings. Okay I will log a compliant for u and we will contact you in 14 working days....not heard one word since.

i have given up and it’s so frustrating, I’ll now be getting estimated bills because I won’t send meter readings unless my old manual meter gets installed. Also, I’ll be leaving eon at the end of contract, extremely shocking level of service!

Leukybear -  Is the actual Smart meter itself - the one in your garage or an outside meter box working and sending readings back ? Look for a flashing red light.

If so there's no problem and you will get actual bills.  Have a look on the online account.

Put the IHD toy in the back of a drawer like most people do after the novelty has worn off.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

The suppliers have Government targets to meet for installs - nobody said they had to work !! :D

I'm no fan of smart meters but I don't get what point you think you're making by refusing to submit readings?  You're just creating inconvenience for yourself.  Your old meter is somewhere in a skip; you're not going to see that again, so ranting about having it back is futile.  The smart meter is still a meter, which is what's needed to measure your consumption. People with non-smart meters have to push buttons to take readings,  people with smart meters have to push buttons to take readings. So what's the difference?
