surely the point of a smart meter is to monitor your usage and keep your bills down.
    No.
Smart meters can't keep your bills down, only you can do that by using less.  You don't even need a smart meter to do so, you can read your meter yourself whatever flavour it happens to be and make adjustments accordingly.  Similarly, with most electricity meters you can check your power consumption by counting the number of times the red light flashes per minute.  You can switch to a cheaper tariff, and you don't need a smart meter to do so.
Actually, smart meters CAN keep you bills down, but sssshhhh, we're not supposed to talk about that.  They can charge far more per kWh the more you use, they can limit the load (oven or tumble dryer, not both) and they can cut you off.

I'm having exactly the same problem over the last few days. Constant searching for the data connection and rebooting. It's all well and good saying that the data is being sent for correct billing but surely the point of a smart meter is to monitor your usage and keep your bills down. So much for 'Smart Meters' more like 'Dumb Meters'!  :disappointed:
    Thanks for that

Do Eon not provide any online measurement from your smart meter, so you can keep an eye on usage that way? Incidentally I don't particularly agree with the view that is often posted on here that the IHD is pretty useless and should be shoved in a drawer, but I thought that as long as you had an online account with your supplier, that same information (and much more detail) would be available to view online?

I've not had any of the above happen to my smart meter, do you think its faulty?

If you'd bothered to look at the SMETS2 Specification instead of making snide remarks, you'd see that Time of Use pricing with Block Pricing, Load Limiting, and Disconnection functionality is built in to smart meters.  For starters, look at lines 1586, 1420, 5049 and 5215.

And can you provide examples where UK energy companies have already implemented these features on their smart meter customers? You always seem to bang on about what sort of nasty things could happen to those with smart meters but have never provided actual proof of this happening in real life.

I don't need to provide any proof because I've never made any such claim, as you very well know.
I've merely highlighted the Smart Meter facilities which have been built into the specification, e.g. Time of Day and Block Tariffs, Load Limiting, Load Shedding, and about which Joe Public might not be very enthusiastic.
But why have we seldom if ever been told?  Is it guaranteed that these facilities will never be used?

Why are you bothering to read your IHD?  Just chuck it in the furthest cupboard and forget about it.  Read your meter every month and send the numbers to your supplier.  Sorted!

So you admit you’re scaremongering. Just give it a rest. Please.

No, I don't admit to 'scaremongering': once again you are lying by attributing to me things that I haven't said.
I'm simply highlighting the FACTS contained within the SMETS2 specification.
