NST January 2020: A Turtle Quest
For the month of January, we are on a quest. “Quest”: a search or pursuit made in order to find something; an adventurous expedition undertaken by a knight or knights in order to secure or achieve something. You can slay dragons, swallow frogs, beat the banks, win against the joy-stealers, reach the end of the month with money in the bank. Your quest is personal to you.You choose your own cape and mask, costume and accessories.

Who are the turtles?
We don’t care where you came from, only where you’re going.
We don’t care where you came from or how you got here, as we all have different backgrounds, genetics, social status, and commitments. Like creating a random character in a role-playing game, we were all “dealt a hand” that we had absolutely no control over—it’s now up to us to play that hand to the best of our ability.

Our awesome group of turtles push each other to level up our lives.

The past is just that: the past. Today can be the first day of the rest of your life if you truly believe that.
We quest with conviction and intelligence
When questing, we have a plan for what we’re going to do, and we know how hard we need to push ourselves to be better than the day before. When setting life goals, we have a plan for what we’re going to do, and what needs to be accomplished in order for us to make progress. Then, we do it.
We plan out what kind of superhero we want to be, pick our own super power, and work every day toward becoming that hero. Those who are willing to dedicate themselves to the cause will get results. Settling is not an option.
No turtle gets left behind. We are all in this together and we’re here to support each other and be accountable to each other.

We question everything

The forum exists to open our minds to a world in which the impossible is possible. One day, you can pay off that debt/mortgage, lift that weight, run that mile, lose those extra pounds, live more sustainably. We question conventional wisdom and social norms and “because that’s how it’s always been done” tricks us into living lives of complacency. Turtles don’t do complacency.

We know there is TONS of snakeoil out there, and we don’t fall for their marketing hype. We find our own path. It’s up to us to take what we’ve learned, question it, and find a way to apply it to our lives.
We take care of business
If you’re a family person, you show up at your kid’s sports games instead of staying late at work. If you’re a gamer, keep gaming. We all have things we love in life, things that are important to us, that make us who we are. As long as these things aren’t detrimental to our health, then we keep doing them. We also have obligations to our families, employers, and friends—we do what we say and we say what we do.
We take pride in ourselves.

We refuse to blame our situation on the government, the weather, genetics, global warming, the economy, parents, etc. We don’t expect anything to be handed to us; we are not owed anything by anybody. In fact, it’s our responsibility as humans to live the best life possible. We need to save ourselves and be our own heroes.
We want to be better husbands, wives, fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, people. We know it’s going to take a lot of hard work and determination to get there. The more daunting the task, the sweeter the victory.

We welcome the challenge:
Question everything. Yep, every single thing. Your habits, routines, reactions, plans... But not so much that your head explodes…
Ugly, unloved or unused = it goes out of your house to be beautiful, loved and used elsewhere.
Exercise your mind and body. We don’t have to do it; we get to do it.
Savings (not sales, as I presume you have side-stepped around them unless you had planned and budgeted for something). Where can you save? Money. Time. Stress and anxiety. Waste. Plastic.
Thankfulness. Let's look at what we have and be grateful for it.
PS
Questors never fail. Never. They may trip up or fall down, but they get up again, dust themselves down and get back on the horse to keep on towards their goal.

The non-negotiables:
- The quest runs through all of January. There are other challenges out there for the year ahead, this is simply a focus for January.
- 16 NSDS minimum. You can keep an NSD if you ONLY buy reduced items, fuel or medical items, or if it’s a random payment that you cannot plan for (but you CAN set the money aside) or weekly activities that have to be paid in cash (again, set the money aside in an envelope at the start of the month)
- Budget. Everything. Food. Travel. Socialising. Hobbies. Bills. Savings. School/work stuff. Birthdays. IN ADVANCE.
- Post at least three gratitudes daily please. We like to hear what you are thankful for.
- Give. Money, time, food. There are others out there who need you! And look after yourself too.
ETA the inspiration for this challenge came from reading nerdfitness.com, a great site for nerds who like fitness.
