That's like saying a football club risks being forced to the wall by HMRC pursuing a tax bill.

But HMRC often ask for payments on account.

And even if they don't, leaving a huge bill to pay, they often are amenable to agreeing a reasonable repayment plan, as they know that if the company is wound up, they probably won't get their money.

Because unlike Ofgem, HMRC don't then demand higher tax payment from every other tax payer to recover their loss in the event they do force closure.

Contact Southend Football Club for more info - they seem to have been successfully playing this game with HMRC for the last decade at least.

Have just received this from British Gas:

Recently Breeze Energy stopped trading and Ofgem, the industry regulator, appointed us to take over the supply of gas to your home.

Don’t worry, you’re in safe hands. We’ll take care of everything and there’ll be no interruption to your supply.

As of 22 December 2019 you became our customer, welcome to the British Gas family.

    What happens next
Please make a note of your meter reading as we'll ask for this once your account is set up. We'll be back in touch in around 14 days to let you know when it's up and running.

We've been told that you previously paid Breeze Energy by Direct Debit. Unfortunately, they haven't provided us with your Direct Debit details.

When your account is set up, we'll confirm your customer reference number (starting 85), then you can log in and update your online account with your Direct Debit details. We'll then apply your Direct Debit discount, as it's always the cheapest way to pay.

So its going to be at least another 14 days to wait!! just to make sure I got it they sent it 4 times!

Twenty minutes ago I received the further details from British Gas- one for Gas and one for Electricity.

    The info says:

So the DD to Breeze isn't going to the new provider. I'll be into the bank tomorrow to cancel the DD.

They've also estimated the annual costs, so they clearly having been given much info.

I took a meter reading on the 19th but didn't submit it as I assumed the website would not be working. I also received the reminder on the 26th to do my monthly meter reading, even though they were already no longer in business.

Wise move cancelling the DD. All suppliers have access to your meter's historic energy usage via your DNO's database

Presumably, that is becuse you elected to cancel it recently, against the advice given to you in this thread

    No worries.
Unlike some smaller suppliers, British Gas accept a range of payment methods and do not insist on payment by Direct Debit.

... but it will cost you!

Yep it will cost you and as it stands we are all getting shafted because we dont have a DD, but equally we cannot do it because guess what we dont have an account!

The question that instantly comes to mind then, that I might ask BG tomorrow, is the DD rate backdated or not?

If it is not then that is a disgrace because we as said above cannot do anything to get it, I would set one up for lower rates even in such a short time period. The moment I get the account info meter readings i have, dd setup and a move to another provider.

I made sure I got an email copy of my bills, but fortunately I had the annual total at the end of September when my fixed deal had ended, so I'll be using that to check for a new provider so I'm ready to change over as soon as the new BG account is set-up.

Will still mean losing out with having to pay them for a couple of months before any change to a new provider will take place.

Just checked my Breeze account- can still log in and access details. Annoyed to find this month's DD still went out on the 26th, even though they were no longer in business. :(

I didn't cancel my direct debit for Breeze and my emails also contained the text: 'We've been told that you previously paid Breeze Energy by Direct Debit. Unfortunately, they haven't provided us with your Direct Debit details.'

Prices in the email I received are:

    Gas

    Daily charge: 30.663p
    Price per kWh: 3.853p

    Electricity

    Daily charge: 27.233p
    Price per kWh: 19.124p

I've calculated I'll see my energy bill increase by about 50%.

According to the email from BG it may take 14 days to set up an account with them.

    Switching takes three weeks.

Indeed, that is what Ofgem say too
British Gas will be in touch with customers with direct debits to explain how to set their account and a new Direct Debit.
    https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/publications-and-updates/ofgem-appoints-british-gas-take-customers-breeze-energy

and it's confirmed on the BG website
Do I need to transfer my Direct Debit to British Gas?

Unfortunately Breeze Energy has not been able to pass your Direct Debit details on to us. Once we have set up your account, you'll receive a welcome email or letter with instructions on how to set up a Direct Debit through your online account or over the phone. We recommend setting up the Direct Debit as soon as your account has been set up as that means we can apply a Direct Debit discount to your tariff.
Remember, if you switch from paying by cash or cheque to Direct Debit the cost of your energy per kWh will go down. Direct Debit is always the cheapest way to pay.

That rather depends on a number of factors.
The average switching time last year (the latest ofgem have provided figures for) was just 16 days for electricity and 18 days for gas.

Only suppliers that are signed up to the energy switch guarantee "guarantees a reliable and hassle-free switch in just twenty-one days"
Even then, over 1% take longer

Otherwise suppliers are only required by their licence to take all reasonable steps to complete a transfer 21 days after the end of the 14 day cooling-off period (so that could be 5 weeks in total, typically)
