28 days before initiating a switch. Then we have the 17+days it takes to switch on top of that.

Make a quick complaint to ofgem,It is their mess.
More people should complain to them otherwise they are getting away with it.

If this 28day rule is real which nobody can get to the bottom of that means ofgem have stuck us with one of the most expensive suppliers for 49days.

The only people that seem to have switched without problems are the ones that ignored ofgems advice and switched as soon as Breeze went bust

I think gwapenut meant are ex Breeze customers able to switch away from BG to Avro successfully.

This is all I can find, that's relevant, on the Ofgem website:

“Confirm your switch

Once you've picked your new supplier and energy tariff, the last step is to confirm your contract and how you plan to pay. Paying by Direct Debit can usually save you more money.

The switching process will then start, and your new supplier will be in touch to confirm your switch-over date.

The switch-over process can take up to 21 days. In most cases, it’s around 17 days.

If you change your mind, you have 14 days to cancel from the date you agree a contract.

You must contact the supplier to cancel any contract.”

By the way, why can I not find anything that relates to the process for appointing an SOLR and particularly the timescales etc.?

I gave my opening readings to BG on the 16th Jan and was assured by BG on the phone that I was then free to switch. Since then I've received a mail from BG stating that my gas supply is going to my new supplier on 6th Feb. Last night I received a mail from my new supplier stating that my electricity supply couldn't be registered by them as it was the subject of another switch (presumably from Breeze to BG). On phoning BG this morning it appears I was given incorrect info by them last week but it was now ok to re-instigate the switch as they now hold the registration.

I've mailed my new supplier to try again.

In all of this, nobody in BG has mentioned to me anything about a '28 day rule'.

As far as I can make out, the only time restriction here is the one which gives a new supplier 3 weeks to switch. In BG's case that 21 days should have commenced on 22nd December. BG have used the switching process to transfer us all from Breeze to BG, Therefore, under The Energy Switch Guarantee, they should have been committed to a 21 day maximum transfer. And this includes the 14 day cooling off period.
• I had a fairly significant credit balance on my account when Breeze went under. Will transferring away now make it more difficult to get that credit balance back?
Would it be best to wait until the balance is transferred over before switching away from BG?

Well thought I would try to get a definitive answer to the 28 day issue. Called the telephone number on the OFGEM website for “Enquiries about Ofgem policies and functions”, it turned out to be the CAB.
The person I spoke to was certain that the 28 day rule did not apply to SoLR switching. He also double checked with a colleague. He then transferred me to BG. They assured me that BG would not object to the transfer.
Armed with this latest info contacted Octopus again. She again said that the 28 day rule applies and being in the industry they know more than a person from CAB. Also BG saying they had no objection was not relevant, they can only OBJECT if you owe them money, and this was a case of the industry computer saying NO.
Perhaps we have been a little hard on BG, but why let facts get in the way of a good moan.

Have hopefully e-mailed OFGEM and not CAB using consumeraffairs@ofgem.gov.uk from their web site to try again to get an authoritative answer.
