Is this a wind up....anyone with a IQ and an ounce of commen sense would say
NEVER !!0 -
Definitely not. Nothing to do with you and if he wishes to make a radical decision to have a vasectomy reversal to have children with someone from overseas he has known five minutes that is his issue. Not selfish at all. Just sensible not to get involved.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free Wannabe, Budgeting and Banking and Savings and Investment boards. The 365 Day 1p Challenge 2025 #1 £667.95/£301.35
Save £12k in 2025 #1 £12000/£80000 -
BTW, and i think others have mentioned this, why is he having the reversal now rather than after they've been living together for 6 months "trial" and they have gone through the (very complex and costly) immigration process ?
He's got plenty of time to save up whilst thats all going on.
And, again as someone else said, this is a tremendously scummy thing to do, in terms of asking. Its nonsensical to be getting the op done before there is any certainty this is a long term thing.
He might even be outright scamming you and planning to go over there for good. Who knows.
Please let us know you've gone with your instincts, which were bang on.0 -
The thing that strikes me is that he effectively wants the OP to pay for this op, but he wants to keep his expensive bikes. He should sell those to pay for it if he is that keen to have this op, ie to afford something you need something you don't need has to go. Just like the rest of us have done all our lives we have to balance what we want and what we need with what can actually afford and, to use an old-fashioned term, "cut our cloth accordingly". I just don't get this modern trend of getting friends/family to pay for things instead of paying for them ourselves. In all my life none of my true friends ever asked me for a loan and I never asked them for one and never would have.
So his options are, sell something to pay for it, earn more money in a shorter space of time or delay the op until he can afford it. It's not life threatening after all and therefore not an emergency.Retired at age 56 after having "light bulb moment" due to reading MSE and its forums. You’re a seriously nice man for even considering this.
It’s not a character reference you’re providing - you’re on the hook for his dodgy loan.“What means that trump?” Timon of Athens by William Shakespeare0 -
It's a no from me too.
Your mortgage application is your priority.
Your friend's medical bill for a non-urgent procedure is not. (If they are indeed planning on having the Op and this is not a story made up by the future wife of a fortnight visit).I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Budgeting & Bank Accounts, Credit Cards, Credit File & Ratings and Energy boards. Thanks for all the replies. I came on here as this seemed so crazy that I wanted other peoples views on it.
At the moment he isn't talking to me or replying to my messages. This is probably because he's annoyed that he can't get the op unless I agree to be a guarantor.
Whilst on the one hand I feel bad for him and can understand his frustration on the other hand I don't as I felt he was a huge financial risk that could ruin my financial situation at a time when I can ill afford it.
Also the situation with this women felt like a scam after all she hasn't even been guaranteed entry and here he is wasting thousands on an op with a low success rate.
He only asked two days before his pre-op so it felt like he rushing me into making snap financial decisions which I don't like doing.
So whilst I might've lost a friend at the same time I feel glad that others are in agreement and have validated my concerns therefore enabling me to make a sensible decision which has ultimately led to my credit score / finances remaining intact.
So I would like to thank every poster for their valuable input.0 -
Its a wise decision, a quick search of the forum will unearth numerous similar threads regarding guarantor loans, and although as a whole only around 5% of these type of loan default, its not so much the loan, its what he wants the money for, that should ring alarm bells, the whole thing is strewn with pitfalls and you are best staying well out of it.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards.
