Why are all the a small minority of banks using MasterCard these days for debit cards?
    Fixed that for you....
Quite right. MasterCard have 18% of the debit card marketshare. AFAIK only fintech and challenger banks (excluding Santander) issue MasterCard debit cards, anyone know what the reason could be?
  • I think I might have one of the last Santander Visa Cards, judging by this forum. Valid from 04/20.

Was yours a full 3+ years?
My select one was renewed in April and has around 18 months (exp 12/21).
There's no logic as others have had less end date on replacement cards. We'll see....

Perhaps end 21/beginning 22 is the cut off, I have a gold one that runs from 12/18 to 01/22.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.

Oddly there seems to be no logic as mine expires 11/21. I think essexexile could be right with the final cut off being beginning of 2022.

Is it that Matercard offers an always-online version that forces every transaction to be authorised? For the challenger banks, this means they don't have to worry about unauthorised overdrafts and they can also offer features such as instant spend notifications. Maybe Visa offers this too, in which case it may just come down to scheme pricing i.e. Mastercard is cheaper as they are trying to win share from Visa which dominates UK debit.

For Santander, I think they are globally a Mastercard bank, so they're just bringing the UK into line with this.

Mastercard also issues offline debit cards as with its rival visa, even in this day and age where most transactions are being processed online, there is still a few cases that offline debit cards are required such as pay at pumps and remote terminals on aircraft without a GSM connection, do note that the new debit MasterCard issued by Santander has 2 BIN ranges 535666 is offline and 535667 is I am assuming online.

When Santander used visa debit, select debit cards have always been issued in the same 4547 BIN range as the standard offline MFC visa cards issued on 123, 123 lite and everyday current accounts, so I highly doubt that the 535667 BIN is reserved specifically for select debit cards, they will more than likely be issued with the same BIN 535666 as the standard offline MasterCard branded MFC cards.

I dont believe there is any "specific reason" as such.

Mastercard used to be dominant in the UK debit card market with its "Maestro" brand, these where basically Debit MasterCard's by proxy and replaced the national schemes such as "Switch" in the UK and "Laser" in the Republic of Ireland along with other countries local debit card payment networks which MasterCard had taken over, although maestro cards were designed to be used internationally on the same basis as its sister credit card brand, there where many problems mainly due to migration failures in regards to the local systems maestro were ultimately designed to replace, MasterCard was never really bothered about dealing with the system issues and many maestro cards were not accepted outside the country of issuance due to the fact a majority of maestro transactions continued to be processed under the legacy pre maestro systems, as a result of this many banks moved to visa debit as at the time debit MasterCards did not exist apart from a few MasterCard branded prepaid products.

Now MasterCard is bouncing back with a debit payment scheme more aligned with its well-known and widely accepted credit card product.

It seems they're still issuing Visa debit cards, at least for new customers. Applied for a new Everyday Current Account last week (backup current account) and just received a Visa debit card in the post today.
  • I know one thing, when I use a debit MasterCard at a Post Office branded cash machine, it always comes up on the screen that my bank may charge me for using this service, Never does though. This doesn't happen with Visa debit cards.
