TSB seem to have binned off any ambitions of moving to Mastercard as well.

I wonder what goes on to make this quite so complicated. Plenty of banks moved between Switch/Maestro/Solo and Delta/Visa/Electron in the 90s and 00s. Have the banks subsequently changed their systems to work in such a way that a further change became harder? Seems foolish if so.

At the current rate I wonder whether Nationwide will be first out of the gates with rebadged cards.
Nationwide have said they will issue debit MasterCards to business customers when they launch their business accounts.
Nationwide have abandoned their plans to launch business accounts.

I went through the change from Maestro to Visa. That took 2 years of planning before it was even started & 18 months to every account having a card and that was because they mass released a lot rather than wait the full 3 years replacement cycle. It is not as simple as just changing cards. There are a lot of Visa based systems that banks use. So they have to have Mastercard ones. That requires a lot of staff training.
Basic core payment systems are fine. It is all the other stuff that takes time to sort out.

Mastercard were chucking millions at banks to swap to them to cover costs and a litter sweetener as well no doubt. Given the current Covid 19 situation. Any thought of card changes will be out of the door due to all the FCA stuff that has just been chucked at banks in terms of payment holidays etc. That is using up all IT & a lot of staff that were working on transfer process.

My debit card on my  current account is due to expire in August and I have  received  the following email from Santander this morning.

    Dear Mrs ................
You’ll soon be receiving a new Santander Debit Mastercard®
We want to let you know that we’ll be replacing your current Visa card with a new Mastercard version. Your new card will do everything your old card did, you’ll get some great features and it’s got a bold new look. Your PIN will be the same as the one you use now.

When you get your new card you’ll need to do two things:
As your card number has changed, check that your card details are up-to-date on the websites that you regularly use.
Set up your new card in your digital wallet if you use Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, Google Pay, Fitbit Pay or Garmin Pay*

If your old card is about to expire your new one will arrive in the next month. If the card is a replacement for a damaged, lost or stolen card, you’ll receive your new one in the next three to five working days.

New features to make life easier.
The features below are now available in our Santander Mobile Banking app.

    Freeze
Instantly freeze your debit Mastercard if you think you’ve temporarily misplaced it or to stop it being used if it’s been lost or stolen. You can use Freeze to stop transactions and cash withdrawals via the Santander Mobile Banking app.

    On/Off Controls
Enable or disable your card features, including contactless, international, online or gambling payments. Simply use the card controls in the Santander Mobile Banking app.

Find out more about your new debit Mastercard at santander.co.uk
    Kind regards
