I know one thing, when I use a debit MasterCard at a Post Office branded cash machine, it always comes up on the screen that my bank may charge me for using this service, Never does though. This doesn't happen with Visa debit cards.
Who is your debit Mastercard issuer?
That message is normally due to the debit card issuer being too lazy to bother joining LINK.
What's the benefits/reasons for joining Link if you could be kind enough to explain? Thanks
Access to all LINK ATMs and related functionality - many will accept Mastercard/Cirrus but some won't.
Non-LINK cards seem a bit more buggy at UK ATMs too but that might just be my experience.

PayPoint ATMs seem to be the ones that cause problems for me - certainly all the bank and supermarket branded ones (possibly excluding Aldi), as well as CashZone and NoteMachine ones are fine.
I've actually had issues with Lloyds machines so far. They don't always like the card on first attempt and spit out saying not accepted then work fine on the second. The balance functionality seems a bit hit or miss too.
Sounds more like a slightly dodgy reader/card/both than an acceptance issue.
Possibly but the machines in question work fine for other LBG and non-Lloyds debit cards.
  • Why are all the banks using MasterCard these days for debit cards?
The major banks used to own part of Visa Europe, so it was in their own interest to issue Visa cards. That's all been sold off now, so they're looking round at who can offer them the best deals. That's why many of them are switching to MasterCard now.

    Fixed that for you....

Quite right. MasterCard have 18% of the debit card marketshare. AFAIK only fintech and challenger banks (excluding Santander) issue MasterCard debit cards, anyone know what the reason could be?

Link' is a UK network that most banks and building societies have joined.  It allows you to do things like view your balance and withdraw cash at other banks' cash machines, but perhaps most importantly, banks that are Link members do not pass charges on to customers when you use another bank's cash machine.

Ive got the old Visa card from Santander too. What is the general consensus? Is it worth reporting it lost to get the new Mastercard or just leave it be

Why would you want to replace a debit MasterCard with a debit MasterCard?

Perhaps they have you, however I’ve not had a problem with them myself.
