Yes I did click on 3rd party stuff and used an DVD. I have just encountered another problem that I have never hade before in that I switched on and a message came up in a circle in the middle of the screen ' SCREEN LOCKED ENTER PASSWORD' I have tried every password that I use but all to no avail. could it be a password set by Compaq?0
-
I doubt it , did you need a password when you first tried to install?
Before the circle comes up did you see the gnu grub screen or a welcome to Mint Screen?4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . Aint no sunshine ☀️ Octopus gas fixed dec 24 @ 5.74 tracker again+ Octopus Intelligent Flux leccy0 -
try no password, blank, nothing
try 'mint' too
For username 'mint' and password blank
Doubt it will be the compaq password unless you are at a bios screen, or you typed it in. That third party stuff is nvidea drivers, possibly nic driver, and other non open source stuff like codex, rather than passwords on my install. Did you choose to encrypt the disk?
If you get sick of Mint, try MX Linux. It is no1 on distrowatch and the speed and smoothness is superb, and made me jump ship0 -
Can I download MX Linux and if I burn it to a DVD will it install and override Mint?0

If it improves all well and good if not I will have to come back and follow the advice given on here which has really confused me. Until then thank you to everybody
There are many different ones - check out Distrowatch https://www.distrowatch.com/
I've been on Linux for 10+ years - once you get to grips with iit you'll never go back to M$ Window$0 -
I respect what you are saying about paying but I think that I may have no choice as I dont really know what I am looking for and where to find it, even on the link that you gave. What I am looking for is MX Linux 32bit that I can download and then burn to a dvd. As you can see I am not very computer literate but am learning bit by bit.
I am still having no joy with the locked screen if I was to put the dvd or usb back in would it re install mint ? Or even put another linux program on like Ubanto or whatever I can down load as I could always re install either mint or mx at a later date.0 -

The best way to install is via USB (imho) https://linuxmint-installation-guide.readthedocs.io/en/latest/burn.html
Read thw windows part, and download etcher to format and copy the ISO of Mint
Edit Or RUFUS as DoaM says.4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . Aint no sunshine ☀️ Octopus gas fixed dec 24 @ 5.74 tracker again+ Octopus Intelligent Flux leccy0 -
yes that is what I created the dvd from as the pc hardware will not take 64 bit. Hence considering the recommendation of mx but cannot find 32 But version.0

Wasn't win10 free to everyone. No need for Linux"The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson0
