norman, I'd use a torrent service as it is often a faster download

I appear to be not explaining myself very well and confusing even the knowledgeable people on here, sorry for that.
My basic problem is being able to access the internet, which I cannot seem to do with Mint. I have gone to WIFI and added a connection which shows up as being there and I have gone into the security and added the key for it but I do not know how to go to the next stage of connection.
The reason for considering going back to using the old HDD from The Acer was just to gain access to the internet via the Windows 10 installed on it, but before doing that I have downloaded a dvd to install Ubunto so may try that to see if I can get on the net with it.
When starting up I re inserted the Mint Installation DVD and that appears to have overcome the locked screen problem just connection to wireless modem and internet to go.0 -
I'd suggest sticking with the distribution you have for now, rather than jumping between them. They're not *significantly* different, and everyone yelling at you to use their preferred one isn't going to get anywhere. (I have a mint installation on a spare pc, and wireless works fine, so I can try things out for/with you, but it's not my main one.)
I'd also suggest starting a new thread - this one has ranged across all sorts of topics. Something along the lines of "help installing linux mint" should get the attention of the right people. I've lost track of which problem is now holding you back. Is it the wifi connection ? Someone posted a while back suggesting a command to execute to list the available hardware.0 -

That might suggest you are now running the live version off the dvd ? Or did you run through the full install again ?0 -

A good point, but ... I'd imagine it must be on if the OP said they could see the wireless network in the list.0 -
