Your ex sound  like the waves coming in on the shore.  They come in full on, suck in the sand or pebbles in their wake, withdraw taking everything with them, only to repeat the process over and over again.
Please step back and try to view his behaviour unemotionally and don,t be drawn back in a second time. Try not even to respond to his attempts to draw you in.  He,s just playing on your emotions.

Thanks for that, I'm with a man who goes out a lot and stays out all night, it's very depressing and makes me feel like sh! t. He's the source of money woes too! I remember when I was single and would go out clubbing and the married guys would chat me up. I saw one guy in a supermarket with his pregnant partner and he and I had had a kiss the week before, I didn't know he had a partner. Some men can be ****! Better to have eyes open and head held high x

That is great advice @[Deleted User] - everyone has to look at themselves and the life they are leading. Only the person themselves can know what they are feeling, where their threshold is, and whether they are brave enough to change.

Hi Emma, caught up with your diary a couple of weeks ago and have to say you’re remarkably strong. Are you okay as you’ve gone quiet? Many thanks for the comment. I've taken a few days to take stock of where I'm at and I'm ok now as long as he sticks to his promise not to contact me. Both children are back in school and it's lovely to not be living in each others pockets 24/7. 
I saw an ad today for a charity that is anti- food waste. You basically turn up to a church and fill a bag of food for £1. I went today and it was brilliant. I'm going to add this to my weekly table of things to do. Now I'm off work I'm not spending. I use no petrol and I'm not spending a fortune on dinners at work. I'm in a good place this week.

Well done you on being so resourceful and positive. You're brilliant. Even if you're faking it for other people it all helps. And well done reaching out to the sister with the kinder ear. 
You've done so much better out of leaving him. You're not having to deal with all those feelings you had everyday with him. Keep going xxxxx
