Post office Receipt Showing My Bank A/C Balance

Hi all - Don't know if this is the right place to post this but some kind person will let me know if it isn't please:-
Paid for my postage using my debit card & asked to withdraw some cash. Have done this before but have never had a receipt print out showing my bank balance on it which the cashier looked at & then handed to me. I did not need to know my balance neither did I wish the cashier to know my bank balance.
I feel that this is a breach of my personal data. When I phoned the bank they referred me back to the Post Office but they are closed just now.
I live in a small locality & really don't want my local shop knowing what I have in the bank.
Any thoughts on this please would be appreciated.

I doubt if your bank balance is personal data in terms of the DPA. Whether it's standard for an over the counter receipt from the PO to show it I don't know, but in future you'll know to say that you don't want one.0

I've done this sort of transaction at other post offices and never had this before - just a money receipt for services. I was shocked to see my balance on it.
I really can't understand it.0 -
Yeah, I think maybe you are being a bit precious.0

In a small community, gossip spreads quickly. Soon the butcher, publican, greengrocer, handyman etc etc will all know how much the OP had (or doesn't have) in their bank account.0 -

If it was in the city I wouldn't mind but the woman who served me is the nosiest, most gossiping woman this side of goodness knows where. It's like an illness with her. If you've ever seen 'Still Game' think Isa but with a different accent.
She'd want to look up yer bum to see if your hat was on straight. Anyone new going in gets the 3rd degree - she's unreal.0 -

I think this is a most unwelcome development, and a real (and unannounced?) invasion of privacy (the balance, not the bum thing). Also seems quite unnecessary (given apps, ATMs, etc). Fair enough to have it as an option that can be requested if desired, but to randomly print it out!I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Credit Cards and Budgeting & Bank Accounts boards. Cash withdrawal
Cash withdrawals in pounds in the UK can be made using your debit card and PIN. This type of withdrawal is similar to withdrawals using a cash machine in that your account balance is immediately updated with the amount you have withdrawn.
Your daily cash withdrawal card limit will still apply subject to the funds being available in your account.
The transaction will be authorised or refused by the Bank in the same way as a cash machine withdrawal.
If authorised, you will be handed the cash and provided with a printed receipt for the amount withdrawn including your updated account balance and remaining amount available within your daily cash withdrawal card limit. The printed receipt should be retained for your records as proof of the transaction.

This could possibly apply to bank branch withdrawals rather than P.O.
Withdrawal receipts from Co-op bank using the P.O. do not show outstanding balance or daily available amounts. It is possible to ask for this as a separate request.
Perhaps the cashier (with a penchant for hats) pressed the wrong button.
How many receipts did the O.P. receive?"It's nice to be important but more important to be nice"

I don't think it is acceptable for your transaction receipt where it is handled by the post office clerk to show your bank balance
however what you could do is contact your bank and ask if this is normal or if there's any way you can avoid it showing.
I don't know if other banks do it but again you may want to switch banks if it bothers you - it certainly would bother me.0
