Got a Huawei phone? Your rights after Google restricts its use of Android - MSE News

4 years is a very long time to keep a device in the mobile phone world so it's not really a big issue. Also you can't just blame google, it will be the app developers who will not want to spend the time building their apps to continue to work on basically obsolete devices.
The device manufacturers also choose not to provide the latest versions of Android for older devices.
KitKat was also released in the back end of 2013 so it's over 5 years old. You can't really expect them to keep supporting such an old version in the mobile world.
I know people of all ages and due to the way mobile phone contracts are offered i don't know one single person who has a mobile phone older than 4 years. The vast majority of people have devices less than 2 years old. This really isn't something that 99% of consumers would care about.
A very sad state of affairs, both for consumers' pockets and for the environment - and the sooner this deliberate obsolescence is put to rest the better it will be for the planet.0 -

But Google will only support any existing phone up to the point where they no longer support the software version (KitKat is already being hit and the phone is only 4 years old) and newer software versions are designed not to work on slightly older phones. They've shown their true colours and by their actions will have lost a huge amount of customer loyalty.
That is pure nonsense I'm afraid. Your phone might only be 4 years old but it's you who bought a phone with an already out of date OS, Kitkat is coming up for 6 years old.
They don't deliberately design the OS not to work on older hardware, it's just that the older hardware can not handle the advances and features of the newer OS's.0 -

But that's not the reason the vast majority of people change their phones to newer ones.
The biggest proportion of people will change their phone simply because they have gotten to the end of their contract and can get a brand new phone while paying the same or a similar amount per month (only a minority will decide to keep their phone and go onto a sim only deal).
I actually don't know of one person who has bought a new phone because their current phone cannot be updated and apps are becoming unsupported.
How many people do you actually know who are using a 5 year old device and want to continue to use it but are forced to upgrade because the apps they use are no longer supported?.
People like new things and even if a phone was guaranteed to be supported for 10 years i don't think it would make any difference to how long people kept their phones.mobilejunkie wrote: »You obviously don't know me then.
That's right i don't but your very much in the minority.
You also don't seem to be living up to your forum name very well with such an outdated device :O0 -

At least my username makes some sense and I don't presume or assume as you continue to do. It also doesn't matter whether I'm in a minority or not; I'm not won over by mass stupidity and gullibility.0 -

All the information i could find on google points to the fact that only a small minority of people would keep a mobile phone for more than 4 years.
Most of the people around my age and younger who generally use their mobile a lot more than older people will generally replace their phone at the end of each minimum contract period.
Even if i look at people at my workplace where 90% of people are older than myself all have phones from within the last 4 years.
But i really have to ask why did you get rid of a perfectly working 2012 devices if you think there is no reason to get newer ones?mobilejunkie wrote: »At least my username makes some sense and I don't presume or assume as you continue to do. You seem to be very defensive and i'm not sure why. I just found it ironic that your username says your addicted to mobile phones but the opposite is true...
You are in a minority but that isn't a bad thing, it's just a fact. But i think the comment about "mass stupidity and gullibility" is a bit unfair because some people use their phones a lot so they will benefit from having up to date devices that operate better.
My phone is just over the 3 year mark now and although it operates well there are noticeable improvements in newer devices that i'm considering getting a new device.0 -
I have a Huawei P8 Lite and am very happy with it. As far as security updates go, whilst it may mean people have access to my (false) information on things like FB, I do not do banking on it or anything like that anyway, I can normally wait till I get home and do it on my heavily secured laptop on my heavily secured LAN.
As far as I am concerned, this is Apple playing the system through Trump, he is that naïve that he will believe anything he is told. Apple want to have a monopoly in the US, Huawei is a threat to them producing reasonable phones and good prices. What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0 -

So condescending. If there was a game show for people making assumptions and jumping to conclusions you'd definitely win.0
