I've definitely heard of couriers delivering to number x in the next street, or to <whatever> street instead of close/avenue/place etc, even the right street name in the next village/suburb.

I suggest you ask amazon for their evidence to check for that. Do they have a photo of the place they delivered to, or grid ref? If it was signed for ask for the evidence and check it was none of your neighbours. Basically do whatever you can to rule out other options, then LBA as a PP says.

I don't see the logic in the OP contacting the police when it's (ultimately) Amazon who are the victim, and Amazon who have most of the useful evidence. Though if you can persuade the police to take a report that might be the path of least resistance,if Amazon are saying they'll definitely refund when they have a crime number.

I've never heard of this either, although in places with multiple occupancy, high crime, this could be a thing now.

How does asking someone other than the OP for ID "get themselves off the hook". If anything it's put them firmly on the hook by proving that they've breached the contract and not delivered the item to the named buyer. It really doesn't matter that the OP can or cannot get the Police involved, the real issue is that Amazon have not carried out the contract, by their own admission, and therefore are liable, plain and simple.

OP, you need to tell Amazon that it's not your responsibility to be getting the Police involved, the theft, if any is not from you but from Amazon. The item wasn't delivered to the address as specified and you now hold them in breach of contract. If this doesn't get you a resolution then send them an LBA.
