I finally have my christmas head on and this year I have decided to do hampers for each family member/couple which is more personalised to them :j :j :j :j

My question is the vodkas......... in particular the chilli vodka, how far in advance could I make this and how do I store it? Can I just leave the bottle in a cupboard so to speak until its time to wrap it all up?

  • In a wine bottle that holds 1 glass of wine, I used about 8 lemon sherberts, but I don't think its an exact science. If you want it sweeter, I'm sure you could add some more.

I'm not sure if gin would work because it has got a distinctive taste of its own. Vodka is usually used because it's tasteless - but, hey, you could always give it a go and see if you like it....

I've done my exploratory voddies, and I'll be doing the ones for hampers a couple of weeks before xmas. Mainly, coz I'm not sure what their shelf life will be, and because I don't want them cluttering up my pantry too long!!

The only thing I would be worried about with the chilli vodka is if the chilli started to discolour or disintegrate in any way as that won't look attractive, but you could always fish it out, the flavour should still be there...

One of the ladies on another thread has pointed out that its only 10 weeks to xmas eve - I am soooo excited!!!!.......:T :T :T

I am LOVING that the thread I started last year on this is still going!

I can say that I had some delighted friends and family last christmas and am struggling to come up with ideas that will top the hampers I did last year.

I even inspired one friend so much she has gone on to make her own rhubarb schnapps....and it was SOOOO delicious.

I might even need to break out the voddy and make some more ....did make another bottle at the end of summer for personal use and it was all gone far too quickly!!

Mrs T, how do you turn the vodka into a licqueur?

Pretty much the same way you turn Gin into sloe gin :)

Although if you follow russian tradition I think you're supposed to dissolve the sugar in a little water before adding it to the vodka.

There is a plethora of recipies out there but it's very much a matter of taste... In Russia a traditional recipe is with cranberries...
Infact I posted it here a couple of years ago :) VERY scrummy :)
Well all this talk about Rum topf reminded me of what my step mother (who is russian) makes every year and her mother etc... it's like a family hobby as is drinking it ;)

You start out with Vodka (Derrrrrr!), my step mother always uses the cheapest stuff she can buy in russia as there will be very little flavour left of the vodka :) Their favourite fruit or berry is cranberry all mushed up to release the flavour (don't be tempted to use juice instead of fresh berries... it just doesn't work!)

Anyway the original recipe they use is
    1litre Vodka
1litre Cranberries (before they are mushed)
    1/2 Kg Sugar
    2 cups of water

You can if you want add orange peel and cinnamon etc but they don't unless it's for christmas presents etc and they want a bit of christmas cheer ;)

Boil the water and mush the cranberries, then pour the boiling water over the cranberry mush and stir it all round some :) allow to cool and add the vodka and sugar. MIX WELL! The russians use plastic soft drink bottles but you can use what ever you want I guess... Now the important bit!

Every day you have to turn the mixture and you must keep it in a dark place! I prefer to keep it cool-ish and I also tend to open the bottles each day to make sure I don't get any bottles bursting (I'm paranoid and the stuff really stains!). Keep this up for AT LEAST 3-4 weeks before you unbottle it and sieve the cranberry mush from the vodka liqueur :) Pour into sterilised bottles and seal or have a heck of a party and drink it ;)

I'm doing fruit salad and starburst. The fruit salad one looks fine but the starburst one looks a bit scummy on the top which doesnt want to mix in. Anyone any ideas please?
