I do have sympathy for you Ronny, and for your son. But your wife is an adult and needs to take responsibility for her own actions, in particular for the impacts on other people. There really isn't any excuse.

She may find that she doesn't have an alternative to cycling or public transport!

Nope, no excuse. maybe people should have to retake their tests after a ban - that might encourage people to be more careful.

She'll use taxis, which will put an even larger hole in our finances than the fines, prangs, and insurance increases...

Is it possible to setup a "contract" with a local taxi firm for regular runs (home-school -work // work-school-home) at a discounted price? Might end up cheaper than actually running a car.

If it comes to it we might have to look at that!

Yes, getting my son to school and my wife to work by bus would be impossible.

It'll be a lot harder when she kills/maims him. Seriously, if it was my kid he wouldn't be getting in the car with her, and she wouldn't be getting my car keys.

Plus, taxis might just be cheaper than her insurance premiums and under the table pay outs. You must be paying an absolute fortune.
  • This may be one of those rare situations when buying a Limo and paying a Chauffeur would be the Money saving alternative to driving her own car!! haha

  • How about electric bikes? Could you get an electric bike and with the time saved accompany them on their 2 miles to school? Does she pay for her own insurance or does it come out of the household budget?

I think you've appreciated the situation cannot continue as it is.

Does anyone else ever drive with her and have you ever asked (discreetly) their opinion? Is it like my old mum with her old friends where she no longer risks it and has regaled us with similar horror stories about what happened before the adult children confiscated the keys and sold the car? Perhaps an advanced driving course or even some refresher lessons?
  • I can see where you coming from it seems to be the way of life at the life at this moment in Britain this hectic way of living even in work we are programmed to do every thing at speed, like I said I'm no saint my self.
Few yrs ago I worked in Germany for a couple of weeks which involved travelling, I was told to keep to the speed limits as police over there carried guns and don't take too kindly to speeding, 20 mph is the urban limits, you do not want to be at the other end of a conversation with someone holding a gun.
on another note you are obliged to tell your insurance of any speeding fines, most have this in their policy, not sure if its law but they can then turn down your insurance due to non disclosure.
