NST December 2018 – Exterminate the debt!

• I am a newbie, so apologies if this is in wrong thread or subject.

I am worried. I have a total of £17,000 of debt on 2 credit cards, Barclaycard and Nationwide.
I have heard of the new FCA rules for this type of debt, which Barclaycard have emailed me to say i am not paying enough a month towards it (£410) (Debt is 12k) and if i do not increase it over 18 months the card will be suspended (not bothered about) and i will have 4 years to pay back the whole 12k. Now without interest that is £250 a month, which is possible if i get a second job (losing 2nd job at Homebase end of Jan). But i need to know what options i have. Any help even from the man Martin himself would be amazing. I am not sleeping, I feel like a failure to my wife and 3 year old., I do not want to die and leave her my debt and zero inheritance.

F0xh0les - well done on that haul of books!

Toni'sfriend -:bdaycake: - happy birthday! Sounds like you're having a lovely day.

Karma - love the splitting up of the 1000 into 100s. May nick the idea...

jimbo - you'd get more help, ideas and advice if you posted your post on the debt-free wannabe section, as this is a specific challenge and many more people will read the DFW section. You are sure to get replies there.

KerryWoman - yay to the temping job.
CCL - well done on the weight loss, stick with it over Christmas.
Toni'sFriend - happy birthday.

Have worked today, it was supposed to be my last day for Christmas but as I missed yesterday I will work Friday morning. DD is having her braces off tomorrow after being on for over 2 years and goes back Thursday for the retainer so I couldn't work either of those two days due to the logistics of travelling.

No money spent today or yesterday, no plans to leave the house tonight as it is horrible out there but I had checked the weather and ran yesterday.

Cleaned out all the kitchen drawers yesterday and lined them with scented drawer liners, cleaned the dishwasher and the bathroom.

• Happy birthday Toni'sfriend - I love a G&T on occasion...
And good luck for your DFD tomorrow Shrewbie.
As suspected - no spends today. Home early, dropped dd at her friend's house, had my shower and am now settling in front of the telly (surprise).

You will get more of a response to this if you post on the main Debt Free Wannabe board. To start a new thread, click the blue button at the bottom on the left. Sometimes the Board Guides move posts, but I am not sure if they ever venture onto here, so you are best off copying and pasting your query onto a new thread on the main board. If you don't get round to this, or don't find it helpful for some reason, there are organisations that can help, debt charities such as Stepchange who have lots of information on their web site and will give personal, one to one help. See https://www.stepchange.org/
Good luck.

Jimbo, the link I'm giving is the Debt Free Wannabe section that apple is referring to: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/forumdisplay.php?f=76

It's a huge board, and its hard to find stuff at first - don't worry, keep going. As Martin has said, there's never a debt problem that hasn't had a solution. There's a "sticky" at the top of the Debt Free Wannabe board, thats where you ask your question. Good luck.

Thanks apple :) it kind of evolved naturally - it's a long time, after all, and our lives, and we ourselves, develop during that time :)

I've made a start on the kitchen renovation .... I measured a wall :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

apple muncher and dolly84 - Thank you. Will have to wait to see if they need me after Christmas. Not worked since July so good to get back to some sort of routine.
Toni'sFriend - Happy Birthday.
NSD today - 11/15.
Managed to do some self care.
Brought own lunch to work.
Walked for about 15 minutes.
Grateful for:
Coping well for the first day at temp job.
Heard that staff finish work at 1pm on Friday.
Nice people at the school.
Good journey to/from work.

• Happy birthday Toni's friend - what fantastic pressies! (For my last birthday I got a £6 budget recipe book! :)) Do love a G&T

No NSD for me today as I had to renew the home insurance. I had £325 put to one side and only paid £201 so I'm pleased with that. Did not venture out due to very inclement weather so no other spends.

Shrewbie congratulations on your DFD!

Gratitudes
- for DH saying he could live without what I was going to go out for today as weather was so foul
- for inadvertently having dinner ready for tomorrow night. I made Jack Monroe's aubergine vindaloo for dinner (see, that birthday present came in handy!) but DH not home at any sort of sociable hour today to eat so I had cheese and crackers and boxed the vindaloo up for tomorrow
- for watching an old episode of Top Gear whilst DD napped on my lap this afternoon
- for my friend saying she'll come over tomorrow

Debt-free date / Mortgage-free date / Savings target date. What’s yours? Currently August 2021 but hope to bring this forward quite a bit. Nothing paid recently.

Organise your outgoings. Budget for the month. For e v e r y t h i n g. Write it down. And stick to it. Plan your meals – avoid waste. YNAB updated with budget for the month. Meal plan completed for this week. Stuck to meal plan again :).

Count up to 15. Fifteen No Spend Days. Currently on 10/15. Got some toiletries, food and posted some Christmas presents.

Refrain from browsing your phone when nothing else is going on for the duration of the challenge. Be present in the moment. Be okay with “boredom.” Shall do my best. No aimless browsing.

What kind of month do you want for yourself? Take a moment and really ask. What activities do I want to enjoy? What seasonal foods do I want to take advantage of? What do I want to have the energy to take on? Where can I build more leisure into my week? How can I be outside as much as possible? I'd like to enjoy December and not feel exhausted by the time we get to the end of the year. Catch up with friends and family, spend time with OH. Can feel myself slipping back into the usual trying to do too much so trying to rein it in before I end up knackered.

Here’s a space to make up your own rule for the month. Please share it! Home - make the most of the time I spend at home instead of just slumping on the sofa.. All presents now wrapped.

Omm. Take care of your mental health. Do something every day this month that makes you feel good: gym, reading, time with family, favourite tv programme, meditation, building a snowman. NOT spending, of course!! Write down 4 gratitudes each day. Getting all the presents wrapped and sent away, yummy tea, spending time with OH and my car :)

No entry to any sales. Unless you have a planned budget and have been saving for a specific item PLEASE do not go to the Boxing Day Sales. Or any sales. Anywhere. It’s temptation you can’t handle to buy tat you really don’t need. STAY AT HOME! Likewise, no takeaways, canteen meals (unless free), coffee shop or corner shop visits. Ok.

Candles - Switch to candles and firelight after dark (or the high-tech adjustable hue bulb equivalents). Love this rule and have a huge supply of candles to use up.

Chase down more awe and joy. Go after it with a purpose. Go and enjoy the sparkly lights. Take a tour of your neighbourhood to look at other people’s outdoor decorations – and be smug about how you are not wasting your money like that. Go and seek Santa’s sleigh in the sky on Christmas Eve. Will do.

Exercise. Get 10,000 steps a day (or set your own target). Move a little more. Embrace the outdoors and enjoy the fresh air. Aiming for 16 days exercise this month, currently on 6/16 :D. Almost at 10,000 steps today.

“Don’t give up. Not ever. Not for one single day. Be safe if you can be. But always be amazing.” Pop on here every day and tell us what you’re up to. Not just the good stuff, but also the bad and the ugly too. Will do my best. I'm here :D

Identify activities and people who drain you. Give yourself permission to take a break from them for 21 days (or as many days as possible) if you can. Just maybe this is a gift you should’ve given yourself a long time ago…? Unfortunately I can't quit my job just to get a break from people who drain me :rotfl: but will continue to avoid as much as possible. Chief drainer is still on holiday :T.

Visit your local area. Find new footpaths, see where a road or path takes you. Explore new horizons. Boldly go where no one has gone before. Oops, mixing my sci-fi….! Will do.

Exterminate (see, we can learn from the DALEKS…) one bad habit from your life for the first 10 days. This is NOT about food. I shall be renouncing a particular game I play on my tablet that just sucks me in and takes hours of my time. And I have recently moved up a level, so it’s even harder to put down…! I shall not play a particular game on my tablet, not played for 18 days.

Remember that you are blessed. Count your blessings daily. Be grateful for what you have. And remember those that have less – donate money, food, non-perishables, blankets to a charity that you want to support. Relish life, one day at a time. Had a conversation with my dad over the weekend about various charities and have one in mind that I want to look into donating to. Set up the direct debit to start next month.

Have started work on my list of 100 things to achieve in 1000 days.
Mortgage 26.4.25 - £108,500  1.8.25 - £106,362.86
Mortgage overpayment savings - £3.33/£50
