Been away for the weekend - and downloaded most programs that I need for reinstall using the 60meg broadband rather than the (current) 1meg at home!
Just need to find time to do the job now ... probably Thursday or Friday.
One more question before I start - when I need drivers from the Asus site https://www.asus.com/uk/Laptops/X555LD/HelpDesk_Download/
which 'CPU or BIOS' do I chose from the drop-down menu?0 -

Is your model the LD?? You have just L in the subject line and there are at least ten variations.
If it is your device, then obviously Ix-4xxxxU and Windows 10 64-bit

Well, I made it! :T
Many thanks to everyone here for advice - much appreciated.
Took me about half an hour to physically do the work.
The 'fiddly bit' outlined early on wasn't actually an issue because once I'd got the 'lid' off, I didn't actually need to disconnect the keyboard as the battery and HD were at the 'front'.
Small issue that the screws were three different sizes and I didn't realise till they were all in the same pot together!! But Google soon sorted that out.
The W10 iso wouldn't copy onto a DVD (too big) so I put it on a USB, but then couldn't get the BIOS to boot to USB, so I put in the older W10 DVD and then once it was basically installed, I plugged in the USB one and reinstalled that over the top!
The main issue was that despite Open Reach promising to come on 3 days so far this week https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/5856061/router-keeps-losing-internet-connection they still haven't been to rectify the latest problem  so any updating takes ages
However, we still have a problem with screen flicker as discussed here https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/5754952/asus-laptop-screen-flicker eleven months ago ... no flicker with charger plugged in but once it's unplugged it flickers when loading anything graphic ... do I need to update drivers or what??0 -

You can try it; https://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/84891/
Check which version is installed now. Perhaps uninstall the Windows version and install the above.0 -

I *think* that maybe I already have it???0 -
Just did my Asus N55 i7, had already had a new battery, but went for a 500gb SD, maybe only equivalent to a new i5, but a lot cheaper.

Why is it I have less time now I am retired then when I worked?0 -
A quick google suggests that the screen flicker is a known issue with this model ... maybe I didn't need a new battery!
I've checked all the drivers are up to date as much as possible, the only thing I haven't done is to 'flash the BIOS' (from the asus site) but last time I messed with updating the bios, it went wrong, so I need to be certain .....0 -
